On the advice of pal and fellow FReeper, al baby, I tried Portillo's Hot Dogs (it's pronounced por-TILL-ohs). It's a Chicago area chain, but they recently opened a store in Buena Park, CA near where I live.
They not only serve hot dogs, but also burgers, sandwiches, salads and other items.
I started off with their Beef Hot Dog with everything, which is the classic Chicago Hot Dog. It was very, very good.
I then had an Italian Beef sandwich. It was wonderful.
If they come to your area, try 'em. I'm sure I'll be back. :)
Here's their national website.
Unnngh!
SoCal ping
Two Portillo’s in our town - Naperville, IL. Yum!!! Italian beef with sweet peppers. Aargh!!! I’m getting hungry!
That’s what I had it with - the sweet peppers! :)
Gramp’s will be HAAAAAAAPY bump!
That beef and peppers on a roll is DEElicious!
I have never had that Chicago beef! I’m dying to try it!
I wanna go with Feiny and watch her eat these dogs, drink a bottle vodka, and watch her puke. |
Now, that's a date!
Without adding the peppers (sweet or hot) it’s a beef dip sandwich. Of course, they’re pretty good too. :)
ES should have let us know we could have meet you there another time perhaps thanks for the ping a ling a ding dong
I’m from Boston, Company sent me to Lisle for training. Co-worker and I must of went to that Portillo’s about a Dozen times. GREAT place! I hung out nights at this cool Mexican Cantina up the street next to those huge Lucent Buildings. had alot of good nights there. People seem friendlier in that neck of the woods.
I lived in Lisle before moving to Naperville. No one in the family complains when we get food from Portillo’s (either dine in or take out). My wife used to work at a Hinsdale jewelry store (now closed) and Dick Portillo used to shop there, so she knows him personally. He is a restaurant tycoon in the Chicago market.
Was he a nice guy or a real Dick? :)
Italian Beef is a big seller in the Chicago area. There are several chains that sell it. Portillo's, Buona Beef, Al's Italian Beef - Brown's Chicken has also started selling Italian beef (it's not nearly as good as from the big three chains - I guess that Frank Portillo [the owner of Brown's] wasn't able to get his brother Dick's Italian beef recipe - ha ha.)
In addition to the chains, there are also numerous small shops that sell it. Every shop has a slightly different recipe and there is a great ongoing rivalry as to who makes the best beef. That is largely a matter of individual taste.
Where I live, there are two "Portillo's", two "Al's" and a "Buona", all within a few miles. I've tried all three. If you don't know it already, I really love Italian beef sandwiches.
Very nice guy!
Well, I tried Italian Beef for the first time yesterday and loved it. I had it with sweet peppers. Which way do you recommend it?
