Did Blockbuster raise anybody else's online rate?
me ^ | 8-18-07

Posted on 08/18/2007 11:00:23 AM PDT by LouAvul

I have a Blockbuster online plan where I have 3 movies at a time, unlimited for the month. For this I pay $18/month.

After I'm through with the movies I take them back to my local blockbuster store and rent three more out of the store, for free, while I'm waiting for my next online selections.

Blockbuster recently informed my that they're raising my rate $7/month to $25/month.

I'm wondering if they did this across the board or if they're numbers crunchers said I was watching too many movies for it to be profitable for them at the $18 rate.

Anybody else have a similar experience?

thanx

Netflix is a better way to go. You couldn’t pay me to go into a Blockbuster Video store. Gum-snapping, clueless teens who always say “great choice, that’s one of my favorite movies” no matter what movie you bring to the register.

Did they do this recently? As in, this weekend?

Or was it some time ago?

Do you think they do this to everybody who rents more than a certain number of movies?

Blockbuster is known for being too expensive in the long run, as you just found out. Netflix is a much better company.

Bad move on their part. Netflix got busted a few years ago for "throttling" (delaying shipment of movies to high-demand customers), although they now have acknowledged such practice in their terms of service.

I predict that Blockbuster will get sued. You should switch to Netflix, regardless. We borrowed plenty of movies from them and have not had any problems.

I think it was last month. My wife is the movie nut, not me, so I don’t really know. She just said that the price went up so she switched to netflix, and not to throw away the movies when they come in the mail (I did that once thinking it was junk mail similar to the kind that AOL used to send).

I had netflix. The time to receive new movies was taking longer and longer. I believe they called it "throttling."

The thing I liked about blockbuster was being able to take the online movies to a store and swap them out there. Kind of like a 2 for 1 special.

I do the 2 movie at a time deal for $16 and have not been notified of an price increase. If they do increase the fee, I’m going back to Netflix.

My rate hasn’t gone up. But for new customers with that same plan, they will be charged once they exchange more than 5 movies in the store. I think the charge is something like $2 per movie over 5 exchanged.

One of the reasons I left Netflix for Blockbuster was the crappy packaging, the envelopes were always mangled and required some effort to get the return envelope ready for the mail box. Blockbuster also gets movies to me within two days of ordering online.

I quit Blockbuster for Netflix just because they rent Blu-Ray discs. Its the only thing I watch now DVD wise. Also with netflix I get a 2 day turn around between return and shipping of a new movie. Thats fast.
