KKK Founder Forest Gets Bad Rap

KENNESAW, Ga.--Is the history of our great nation important to you?

Union Gen. William T. Sherman said of Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, "After all, I think Forrest as the most remarkable man our 'Civil War' produced on either side." This came from a man who was once a foe of Forrest on the field of battle.

Why do some folks attack America's heritage?

Several years ago, attempts were made to change the name of Forrest Park in Memphis, Tenn. Now, there are people trying to change the name of Nathan Bedford Forrest High School in Jacksonville, Fla.

But was Forrest an early advocate for civil rights?

Forrest's speech during a meeting of the "Jubilee of Pole Bearers" is a story that needs to be told. He was the first white man invited by this group, which was a forerunner of today's civil rights groups. A reporter at the Memphis Avalanche newspaper was sent to cover the event, one that included a Southern barbecue supper

It is Forrest with two “r’s”

And he was probably America’s greatest calvary and light infantry general

He was a slave master/trader who freed all of his slaves before the end of the war.

He also founded the KKK and then ordered it disbanded.

A wide mix to go from.

"Remarkable" does not necessarily mean "good" or "worthy of emulation" - it is dishonest to dragoon Sherman in as a character witness for Forrest.

Nathan Bedford Forrest had great physical courage and was a gifted cavalry commander.

He also bought and sold human beings as chattel for a living and committed war crimes.

I’d give Forrest a pass before I’d give Byrd a pass.

You blue zone liberals just can't abide the fact that Gen. Forrest is widely recognized as the greatest cavalry commander in the history of mankind. He is among the Greatest Americans that ever lived.

The late, great, civil war historian Shelby Foote said there were two geniuses to come out of the civil war, Abraham Lincoln and Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Here in Wake Forest, NC there was a street named “Forrest Road” with 2 r’s. My parents lived there. When the Politically Correct crowd figured it out, they changed it to the current “Forest Road”.

Each of those things can also be said of US Grant

“A wide mix to go from.”

Indeed.

And, we really do run a grave risk when we ask people of previous times and places to somehow conform to our current moral sensibilities. For his day, under the guidelines he was told to live by, no doubt that Forrest was a moral man as well as a great military leader.

Think of it this way — Abraham (of the Bible) had slaves and a child by his wife’s slave. Such was not uncommon in those days, and Abraham is not criticized for doing those things. If he tried that today, we’d have him in jail.

It seems his major negative legacy outweighs the positive things he may have done. I find no reason to celebrate him. The Klan has been a disgrace to American society since its founding.

I’m hope that D.C. and all of the other cities will also change the name of Malcolm X Blvd, Park, school or whatever, too, being that he referred to whites as “blue-eyed devils.”

“What about it? The drunken bluebellies in the fort didn’t want to surrender......so Forrest’s men whipped their @sses but good.”

And, allegedly, slaughtered any and all captured Union troops that happened to have a black skin (and many w/ a white skin).

I know, it’s war...
