WASHINGTON (AP) -- Bill Belichick has been illegally taping opponents' defensive signals since he became the New England Patriots' coach in 2000, according to Sen. Arlen Specter, who said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told him that during a meeting Wednesday.

"There was confirmation that there has been taping since 2000, when Coach Belichick took over," Specter said.

Specter said Goodell gave him that information during the 1-hour, 40-minute meeting, which was requested by Specter so the commissioner could explain his reasons for destroying the Spygate tapes and notes.

Belichick knew the rule, was reminded of the rule, was sanctioned by the league, but never stopped doing it.

That statement is highly disputable, and two parts are outright incorect.

He may or may not have known the rule. His actions were completely consistant with having misunderstood, however, one can always be cynical.

He was sortof reminded of the rule. The reminder was mis-stated and proscribed the taping of defensive signals being used during the game, which he not only didn't do, but never was afforded the opportunity to do. One can assume he saw the reminder or not. He says that he didn't.

He was sanctioned by the league, but there is currently no evidence that he continued the taping after that time.

Even if he did understand the rule differently, it is his job to get such things right, and properly, whether by mistake or intent, the league punished him for it forcefully.

What would your Rabbi say if you asked him if it was permissible to use information from a competitor that came into your hands either through his carelessness or by chance? You know what he would say.

You mean like game tapes?

Could it be that there are legal ways of counterspying and the use of film is illegal because it gives too much of a capability?

As highball notes, that's exactly it. It's a fine line being drawn in an attempt to separate what can be done by the mind and what technology can do for you. The line is drawn different places, and probably isn't very consistant, but that is likely the line the NFL is attempting to draw.

Gee, I hope none of the other coaches did anything untowards.

I have a bozo senator that is quite content with gas being $3 per gallon but wants to investigate an extra-ordinarily minor football scandal.

Hey Arlen, why was Sandy Burglar really trying to take those documents? Do ya think maybe you should call for an investigation????? Oh no, let's investigate something important, like whether a football coach tapes opposing teams in violation of league rules!!!!!!

It is reading posts like yours that makes me doubly glad the Giants beat the tar out of the Patriots in the Superbowl.
