LANCASTER [California]- The flash of a smile, a flash of steel, a flash of skirt and a flash in the pan (actually a levitating table) got things started at Wednesday morning's press conference at City Hall to announce details of the 2008 California Poppy Festival. The annual event will take place Saturday and Sunday, April 19 and 20, at City Park, 43011 10th St. West.

Mayor Henry Hearns smiled as he introduced Japanese swordsmen Michael Kazmer and Buddy Merritt of Araki Mujinsai Ryu Laido, who will perform at the festival.

....

The swordsmen were followed by salsa dancers Zuly Zappala and her son, Miguel Cabrera, from AV Dance Salsa, who also will perform at the festival.

Feature performer magician Ron Saylor, asked Hearns' help to levitate a small table. At one point, Saylor let go and Hearns appeared to levitate the table...

Saylor then opened a drawer in the table and produced a silk poppy.

Hearns assured everyone that much more magic is in store at the festival.

...

New to the festival this year are a miniature radio-controlled NASCAR race on the Poppy Speedway; a canine stunt show with the Valley's Kyra Sundance and her dog, Chalcy; and Pre-historic Poppy Land, where visitors can see replicas of dinosaurs that roamed the Valley's poppy fields millions of years ago.

Interim City Manager Mark Bozigian announced the headliner music acts that will perform at the festival: the Magnolia Sisters, Acoustic Alchemy and Lee Ritenour.

Not only will poppies be in Antelope Valley fields come festival time, plenty of poppies will be at the festival itself.

California's state flower, families and community will be celebrated at the festival, which features a bloom of entertainment, attractions and activities for all.

Poppy Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.

Nice

Spring is my favorite time of the year. Here in Central Texas, the Bluebonnets are kicking in really nicely.

I'll have to make a trip to CA one spring to see these.

I planted Poppies along side of my house last year. This year they’re going bonkers! It looks awesome.

My rancher buddy said that they’re called Poppies because when the seed pod is ready, it “pops” and distributes the seeds.

I’ll never forget a trip to Texas I made several years ago during springtime. The highways were lined with fields of blue. It was breathtaking.

Frankly, I don't see what the Big Freakin' Deal is.

I have a back yard full of those orange poppies and have tried for 3 years to grow my native Bluebonnets, they would look great together but I am about 200 yards from the coast and it never gets warm enough; but then the heat was the only reason I left Texas.

The Willow City Loop is a famous wildflower route in Central Texas. I try and take this route once a year during spring. We are camping near there this weekend, and will take the trip on Saturday.

The Indian Paintbrushes are awesome too.

We have them here in CA as well. I’ve hiked up around the summit of Mt. Pinos when it’s covered with Indian Paintbrush. Quite a site to behold. They do very well up there above 8000 feet elevation.

Indian Paintbrush are probably my favorite wild flower. The colors are bold and brilliant.

This is what they look like here mixed with bluebonnets.
