Anything with ammonia will hel relieve the stinging sensation where the stinger(s) entered the skin. Keep the ammonia away from his eyes! As other FReepers have stated, urine also has ammonia and can be used as a field expedient. If the stings don’t appear to be too painful for him, just some baking soda and water paste should bring relief.

60 lb Aussie

He’s panting, but doesn’t appear to be swelling.

Medicine on the way.

Crush up a bunch of Vitamin C pills, say 10 grams worth (that is 20 of the 500mg pills). Mix with something that your dog will drink, and administer it orally. Will help the swelling and any allergic reaction.

InstructionsDifficulty: Moderate
Step1Remove the stinger immediately in case your dog is allergic to the poison and goes into anaphylactic shock. Using a credit card, scrape out the part of the stinger you can see or pull the whole stinger out with tweezers, but only if you can reach it. Breaking it will allow more poison into your dog’s blood stream. If you can’t reach it, leave it alone unless your dog needs veterinary attention. Then let your vet get it out.
Step2Assess your dog’s physical condition. If he or she is having problems breathing, acts weak, disoriented, or is vomiting or having diarrhea, see a veterinarian immediately. If your dog seems OK, continue to keep an eye on them for at least 24 hours.
Step3Clean the area of the sting with a baking soda and water paste. This will also help if the area starts to swell or gets itchy.
Step4Give your dog a dose of an over the counter antihistamine to counteract minor reactions, but only after you’ve gotten approval and dosage information from your veterinarian.
Step5Use a cold pack on the area for a few minutes several times a day to help with any lingering pain your dog may experience. The cold should also help with any low grade fever your dog may be carrying.

What you are calling “ground hornets” are probably yellow jackets. They are the ones that make nests in the ground, usually in/under the stumps of dead trees or shrubs. I made the same mistake, but the doctor and nurses corrected me when they treated me and prescribed the Epi-pen. The Doc seem to think it was important to make the distinction, something about different types of venom between them. All I know is that they almost took me out.

I also learned that when they sting, especially if you swat or smash them when they sting you, they leave a pheromone marker and other members of the hive zone in on it and sting that spot repeatedly.

Windex has ammonia.

Ammonia is good for wasp stings.

Getting stung by bees and wasps was part of growing up here in Panama.

My mother always had a bottle of ammonia at the ready.

On an aside, I would go find the location of the nest and see what kind of insects they are. Twenty stings sound like a lot.

Glad the poochie’s going to be better.

Some years ago I had a greyhound who was stung several times in the face by hornets. He looked like some other breed, actually like the dog on Lucianne.com, the bandwidth beast...his face was so swollen. The vet said Benedryl, and since greyhounds have so little fat, it wouldn’t take much. Half a tablet or less, and he slept for 5 hours. Face went down to normal size, thank God. Hope your dog is okay. Scary stuff, and as another Freeper said, ground hornets are the culprit this time of year. Awful vicious things.

I sprayed windex around his neck, and legs....I checked his gums, they seem to come back to pink pretty quick.

The upside is, generally only honeybees, carpenter bees and bumble bees have barbed stingers that tear off in the flesh. Wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, etc. tend to have smooth stingers, so they generally leave no stinger or venom sack in the skin, just the venom they injected.

The downside is they can sting repeatedly...As I learned once when I swatted at one and it got caught under my watchband...

Not all window cleaners have ammonia any more as it is harmful to some of the coatings used on newer windows.

I concur with your post. I’m co-founder of a dog rescue and finances have made it necessary for me know doggy first aid. You gave very good advice.

REMEMBER PEOPLE - NEVER GIVE YOUR DOG ANYTHING BUT ASPIRIN!!!
No Advil, Tylenol, ibuprophen, etc., ever, ever, ever.

“Twenty stings sound like a lot.”

It sounds more than excessive.

And now for this important DOGGIEPING Announcement!

I've lost my list! I did a deep clean of my computer and I guess inadvertently deleted the folder I kept the ping list in.

If you were previously on my ping list and would still like to be on the list now, please let me know... I am re-building the list from scratch!

We live on a wooded 1/2 acre. I have no idea where it is.

Still, it could happen again if they're not found and not eradicated. If you find them, mark the area, return at night and nuke them.
