ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)The Oakland Raiders fired Lane Kiffin on Tuesday just four games into his second season, bringing finality to a situation that had been simmering for eight months.
Kiffin had a 5-15 record since being hired last year, losing his final game 28-18 on Sunday to San Diego.
The decision on Kiffin was as much about his frequent criticisms of owner Al Davis franchise as it was the teams performance on the field. Those critiques reached a peak when Kiffin distanced himself from the defense after a blowout loss in the season opener, saying that was under coordinator Rob Ryan and Davis control.
The Raiders said the move was made for cause, meaning they will likely try not to pay Kiffin for the remainder of his contract. He signed a two-year deal worth about $4 million with a team option for 2009 when he took over last year. Kiffins agent Gary Uberstine had no immediate comment.
The move comes a day after the St. Louis Rams let go of Scott Linehan, marking the second firing at the quarter point of the season. The last time a coach had been fired this early in the season was when Davis got rid of Mike Shanahan after four games in 1989.

PING!!
Lane did a good job with a bad team and handled himself pretty well.
I think he should find another gig easily.
Al Davis: The coach must go down, and he must go down hard, allow me to introduce you to the new coach of the Oakland Raiders, Barney Frank.
Just like with Shanahan, Davis claims he fired Kiffin for cause and will not pay him for the remainder of his contract.
I love Al Davis!!!

We have one of the best 45-minute teams in the league this season with the Raiders. It’s a pity games last for 60 minutes. ;-)
Until Al Davis fires himself it won’t matter. As long as Al is at the helm the Raiders will be a joke.
The Raiders have had the lead in their last 3 games, only
to lose.
Maybe they should’ve let Lane fire Ryan.....
I have not been impressed with JaMarcus. Yeah, sure he can throw the ball 70+ yards, but completions are too few, he holds the ball too long and gets sacked a lot, he decides too late to run with the ball and doesn’t get much running, doesn’t have good touch, etc.
I think the Broncs should hire him as an assistant, just to rub it in ol’ Al’s nose.
How old is Al these days ?
The little old lady in a jumpsuit is a basketcase.
Oakland will be joke until she is replaced.
Defense gets tired because the offense has too many three-and-outs, esecially in the second half. Inept QB, banged up RBs, the opposing team defenses are making the adjustments in the 2nd half... it’s a team collapse.
When the punter is the team’s MVP, something’s terribly wrong.
Can't argue with that!
If Denver fails to make the playoffs this year (a very real possibility, IMO) will it be time to replace Shanahan?
Comittment to Execrable.
No! There is no better choice. Besides, Denver is winning the west this year.
The Raiders Are The Greatest First-Half Team In The NFL! lol
