NEW YORK (AP) — It is a fitting backdrop for a ghost story: An old mansion on a secluded hilltop sits empty, save for a caretaker who lives upstairs. A no-trespassing sign is staked near the locked metal gates, and the stately grounds are covered in thistles.

Only in connection with things like mob slayings can one justify the use of adjectives like “grisly.”

stabbing, strangling and drowning the man before sawing the body to pieces and tossing them into the furnace

Doesn't sound like that was enough to make sure he was dead and gone.

It sounds rather like the ancient Celtic “threefold death” used in ritual sacrifice.

The victims were first strangled, then stabbed and then finally drowned.

Google “bog people” to check it out.

In Braveheart, that is why Wallace died the way he did.

[hanged, disemboweled, drawn and quartered with his body parts sent to the “four corners” of the country and his head placed on the palace gate pike]
His killers wanted to tap into the ancient psyches of the Scots by reenacting a “killing of the sacred king” scenario to dissuade them from another attempt at rebellion.
