Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

Not knowing where exactly your daughter moved I can’t recommend anything local, but Howard Garrett has a GREAT gardening show on the radio on Sunday mornings on 660 AM out of DFW. Very knowledgeable and practical. Also available is Texas Gardening Magazine which addresses various areas of Texas, might make a worthwhile gift someday.

The orange peels are already in the freezer so they may not be worth anything to candy anyway. I freeze them and grind them to get rid of fire ants.
LOL - heaven is peaches in pie or ice cream. Or peach pie with vanilla ice cream.
Now, THAT is torture. The other thing - it wasn’t really torture.

I have used this method, when the Bermuda grass was so thick, from many years of growth and I wanted vegetables.
Maybe about 1965 Organic Gardening had an article on it, said it was used every 7th year in Israel to allow the land to lie fallow and recharge.
As I recall, I put manure on it and started the watering for several days. Let the goodies from the manure mix down in the hay, then added a layer of peat moss and topped that with sand and planted, as I recall it all grew.
Bill took scrap lumber and built a simple box around the bales and that helped to keep the moisture in them.
All your methods in the article are good ways to garden..

Real torture is Raspberry pie and ice cream.

Sugar and water and boil it till it will coat the peels and leave a candy on them, it has been too many years since I made them.
Lemon should be good, add cinnamon and you can coat nuts with it, or I like nutmeg as the spice.
We have only methods like those we discuss here to know the truth and it is up to each individual to find these things out.<<<

Lavender Essential Oil is my #1 used oil, it will calm your nerves when you are upset, or a drop on your pillow will have you sleeping like a baby.
I also sleep with and use Spearmint E. Oil for breathing.
Peppermint E. Oil for upset stomachs.
Oregano E. Oil for infections, sinus, or on skin.
Orange E. Oil for killing germs, a couple drops in the water type vacuum and in my dish water.
On the whole, I simply take the lid off the bottle and smell, that is all that is needed.
If you use the Oregano at the first sign of a sinus infection, you will not get one.
My first bottles were a gift for the soapmaking I was learning and one day I read that Lavender cured headaches and thought “I have that and will try it”.
It cured a super big headache and I rarely have one now, for the headaches, I will smell it several times and also rub a drop on my temples, the end of my nose and I think the drop on the back of the neck is what makes it go faster.
If you google for healing with lavender essential oil, you will find many other things that folks use it for.
I read it helped cranky babies and as a friend had said they had a new cranky grandchild, sent her the report, as I knew she would have it in her soapmaking supplies.
It worked....and is so simple, you rub a drop on your skin, under your blouse, then lay the babies head against your shoulder and in a few minutes the baby is relaxed and asleep.
DO NOT put any E.Oil on a babies skin or clothes for a couple years.
I wish that I had known this trick 60 years ago.
I look back and know that the grandmothers before WW2 all smelled of Lavender and it was used in all their clothing drawers, and rooms, I remember going to other kids homes and how the grandparents smelled. Good.
