Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

FDA Approves Vaccine for 2009-2010 Seasonal Influenza

FDA NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: July 20, 2009

Media Inquiries: Peper Long, 301-796-4671, mary.long@fda.hhs.gov

FDA Approves Vaccine for 2009-2010 Seasonal Influenza

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced that it has approved a vaccine for 2009-2010 seasonal influenza in the United States.

The seasonal influenza vaccine will not protect against the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus that resulted in the declaration of a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on June 11, 2009. The FDA continues to work with manufacturers, international partners and other government agencies to facilitate the availability of a safe and effective vaccine against the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus.

Although this year’s seasonal vaccine is directed against other strains of influenza expected to be circulating and will not provide protection against the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus, it is still important for those Americans for whom it is recommended to receive the seasonal influenza vaccine. No vaccine is 100 percent effective against preventing disease, but vaccination is the best protection against influenza and can prevent many illnesses and deaths.

“The approval of this year’s seasonal influenza vaccine is an example of the FDA’s important responsibility to assure timely availability of vaccine to help protect the health of the American public,” said Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D., commissioner of food and drugs. “A new seasonal influenza vaccine each year is a critical tool in protecting public health.”

The six vaccine brand names and manufacturers are: Afluria, CSL Limited; Fluarix, GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals; FluLaval, ID Biomedical Corporation; Fluvirin, Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics Limited; Fluzone, Sanofi Pasteur Inc.; and FluMist, MedImmune Vaccines Inc.

Each year, experts from the FDA, WHO, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other institutions study virus samples and patterns collected from around the world in an effort to identify strains that may cause the most illness in the upcoming season.

Based on those forecasts and on the recommendations of the FDA’s Vaccine and Related Products Advisory Committee, the FDA determines the three strains that manufacturers should include in their vaccines for the U.S. population. The closer the match between the circulating strains and the strains in the vaccine, the better the protection against the disease.

The vaccine for the 2009-2010 seasonal influenza contains:

* an A/Brisbane/59/2007 (H1N1)-like virus
* an A/Brisbane/10/2007 (H3N2)-like virus
* a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus

There is always a possibility of a less than optimal match between the virus strains predicted to circulate and the virus strains that end up causing the most illness. Even if the vaccine and the circulating strains are not an exact match, the vaccine may reduce the severity of the illness or may help prevent influenza-related complications.

According to the CDC, between 5 percent and 20 percent of the U.S. population develops influenza each year. More than 200,000 are hospitalized from its complications and about 36,000 people die. Older people, young children, and people with chronic medical conditions are at higher risk for influenza-related complications. Vaccination of these groups is critical.

Additionally, influenza immunization of health care personnel is important in protecting them and others from influenza.

Dräger Initiates a Voluntary Device Recall of Stabilet Contacts Current Users

Contact:
Glenyce Scott-Hoglund
215-660-2310
Glenyce.scott@draeger.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Telford, PA – July 20, 2009 - Draeger Medical Inc. recommends the removal of Stabilet Infant Warmer models 200, 300, 1250, 1500, 200/3000, 2000, 2200/3200, 3000, and 3200 from service and replacing them with alternative warmers as soon as it is feasible.

This action is in response to an event that took place in a neonatal unit of a hospital in Minnesota in 2008. ECRI conducted an investigation of the event and concluded that the likely cause was the Stabilet. Dräger has not been given the opportunity to investigate this incident or to test the Stabilet at issue, and therefore; we cannot comment on ECRI’s investigative conclusions. However, Dräger determined to err on the side of caution and has initiated a voluntary recall. As part of this recall, Dräger agrees with ECRI’s recommendation to remove the Stabilets from service as soon as it is feasible. The recall recommends that the hospital take the following actions:

(1) Hospitals should immediately begin planning to remove the referenced models from service:

1. Hospitals with sufficient number of unaffected models to meet anticipated clinical needs should immediately remove the referenced warmers from service.
2. Hospitals currently unable to provide required heating therapy if these units are removed from service should
1. Begin budgeting for the replacement of the units; and
2. Limit use of the referenced models to patients NOT requiring O2 – enrichment may increase the risk of fire. Hospitals should inform all potential users of this restriction and clearly mark referenced units to reinforce this message.
3. Use a different heating modality (e.g., an infant incubator) if an infant requires O2therapy (whether supplemental or via intubation) and no unaffected warmers are available.

(2) Once removed from service, the warmers should be rendered unusable by removing the heating element and the power cord. These warmers should not be used or sold for any other purpose.

In 2004, Dräger acquired from Hill-Rom Co., Inc. (the manufacturer of this product) the Stabilet product line of radiant infant warmers. Hill-Rom discontinued manufacturing the Stabilet product line in 1998, six years prior to its sale to Dräger. Service support and spare parts for Stabilets were discontinued at the end of 2003. All known users of this product line were informed that this product was discontinued at this time.

If you need further information please contact Mike Kelhart (1-800-543-5047 ext 2349). A recall notification is being sent out to all known current users and is available in the Dräger website at www.draeger.com/Stabilet.

Geez, whatever happened to just soap and water.

Have we become such a convenience and disposable oriented society that we’re too lazy to even wash the best way?

Tips for Older Adults to Combat Heat-Related Illnesses
Risk of Heat-Related Problems Increases with Age

As we age, our ability to adequately respond to summer heat can become a serious problem. The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health, has some advice for helping older people avoid heat-related illnesses, known collectively as hyperthermia, during the summer months.

Hyperthermia can include heat stroke, heat fatigue, heat syncope (sudden dizziness after exercising in the heat), heat cramps and heat exhaustion. The risk for hyperthermia is a combination of the outside temperature along with the general health and lifestyle of the individual. Health-related factors that may increase risk include:

* Age-related changes to the skin such as poor blood circulation and inefficient sweat glands
* Heart, lung and kidney diseases, as well as any illness that causes general weakness or fever
* High blood pressure or other conditions that require changes in diet. For example, people on salt-restricted diets may increase their risk. However, salt pills should not be used without first consulting a doctor.
* The inability to perspire, caused by medications such as diuretics, sedatives, tranquilizers and certain heart and blood pressure drugs
* Taking several drugs for various conditions. It is important, however, to continue to take prescribed medication and discuss possible problems with a physician.
* Being substantially overweight or underweight
* Drinking alcoholic beverages
* Being dehydrated

Lifestyle factors can also increase risk, including extremely hot living quarters, lack of transportation, overdressing, visiting overcrowded places and not understanding how to respond to weather conditions. Older people, particularly those at special risk, should stay indoors on particularly hot and humid days, especially when there is an air pollution alert in effect. People without fans or air conditioners should go to places such as shopping malls, movie theaters, libraries or cooling centers which are often provided by government agencies, religious groups, and social service organizations in many communities.

Heat stroke is an advanced form of hyperthermia that occurs when the body is overwhelmed by heat and unable to control its temperature. Someone with a body temperature above 104 degrees is likely suffering from heat stroke and may have symptoms of confusion, combativeness, strong rapid pulse, lack of sweating, dry flushed skin, faintness, staggering, possible delirium or coma. Seek immediate medical attention for a person with any of these symptoms, especially an older adult.

If you suspect that someone is suffering from a heat-related illness:

* Get the person out of the sun and into an air-conditioned or other cool place.
* Offer fluids such as water, fruit and vegetable juices, but avoid alcohol and caffeine.
* Encourage the individual to shower, bathe or sponge off with cool water.
* Apply a cold, wet cloth to the wrists, neck, armpits, and/or groin, places where blood passes close to the surface and the cold cloths can help cool the blood.
* Urge the person to lie down and rest, preferably in a cool place.

For a free copy of the NIA’s Age Page on hyperthermia in English or in Spanish, contact the NIA Information Center at 1-800-222-2225 or go to http://www.niapublications.org/agepages/hyperther.asp or www.niapublications.org/agepages/hyperther-sp.asp for the Spanish-language version.

The NIA leads the federal effort supporting and conducting research on aging and the medical, social and behavioral issues of older people. For more information on research and the aging, go to www.nia.nih.gov.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) — The Nation’s Medical Research Agency — includes 27 Institutes and Centers and is a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Questions & Answers
Novel H1N1 Influenza Vaccine

July 20, 2009 2:15 PM ET

Q. What are the plans for developing novel H1N1 vaccine?

A. Vaccines are the most powerful public health tool for control of influenza, and the U.S. government is working closely with manufacturers to take steps in the process to manufacture a novel H1N1 vaccine. Working together with scientists in the public and private sector, CDC has isolated the new H1N1 virus and modified the virus so that it can be used to make hundreds of millions of doses of vaccine. Vaccine manufacturers are now using these materials to begin vaccine production. Making vaccine is a multi-step process which takes several months to complete. Candidate vaccines will be tested in clinical trials over the few months.

Q. When is it expected that the novel H1N1 vaccine will be available?

A. The novel H1N1 vaccine is expected to be available in the fall. More specific dates cannot be provided at this time as vaccine availability depends on several factors including manufacturing time and time needed to conduct clinical trials

Q. Will the seasonal flu vaccine also protect against the novel H1N1 flu?

A. The seasonal flu vaccine is not expected to protect against the novel H1N1 flu.

Q. Can the seasonal vaccine and the novel H1N1 vaccine be given at the same time?

A. Clinical trial results will be necessary to confirm that novel H1N1 and seasonal vaccine will be safe and effective if given at the same time. We expect the seasonal vaccine to be available earlier than the H1N1 vaccine. The usual seasonal influenza viruses are still expected to cause illness this fall and winter. Individuals are encouraged to get their seasonal flu vaccine as soon as it is available.

Q. Who will be recommended as priority groups to receive the novel H1N1 vaccine?

A. Based on what we’re currently seeing with respect to the virus and epidemiologic data, states, communities, and health care providers should begin planning strategies for how they will vaccinate younger people (children and younger adults), pregnant women, healthcare personnel, and people who have underlying health conditions. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and other federal advisory bodies will continue to monitor the virus and review epidemiologic data over the summer. We’ll be looking to the ACIP and other stakeholders, as well as the public, as we move forward in our planning. It is possible that vaccine priority groups will differ from earlier guidance as more data becomes available however it’s very important for planning to continue based on information currently available.

Q. Where will the vaccine be available?

A. Every state is developing a vaccine delivery plan. Vaccine will be available in a combination of settings such as vaccination clinics organized by local health departments, healthcare provider offices, schools, and other private settings, such as pharmacies and workplaces.

Q. Are there other ways to prevent the spread of illness?

A. Take everyday actions to stay healthy.

* Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
* Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
* Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures. These measures will continue to be important after a novel H1N1 vaccine is available because they can prevent the spread of other viruses that cause respiratory infections.

Q. What about the use of antivirals to treat novel H1N1 infection?

A. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaled powder) that fight against the flu by keeping flu viruses from reproducing in your body. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. This fall, antivirals may be prioritized for persons with severe illness or those at higher risk for flu complications.

Food Bank Experiencing Worst Shortage Ever
Number Of People Seeking Assistance Doubled

WINSTON-SALEM — A year ago, only one in 14 families relied on food from the Second Harvest Food Bank. That number has doubled to one in seven — an increase that has food bank leaders saying the organization is experiencing its worst food shortage ever.

Leaders at the Second Harvest Food Bank say their shelves are almost bare. More

“I have never seen the food supply as low as it is,” said Second Harvest spokesman Clyde Fitzgerald. “Demand for food assistance has been up a consistent 75 percent, and it has been month after month after month versus last year.”

Second Harvest gets its supplies from donations and from government funding. With the state budget tied up in the North Carolina legislature, the organization said it isn’t getting the state funding it expects each summer. The fact that donations are less anyway during the summer coupled with the presence of a recession that is exacerbating the problem, and you have the worst shortage in the history of the organization, leaders say.

“The amount of food coming in to us has virtually come to a halt,” Fitzgerald said. That shortage leads to a trickle-down effect at the 400 local pantries that depend on Second Harvest for supplies.

Cathedral of His Glory church in Greensboro is one of those organizations that used to rely on the food bank for food to give to parishioners.

“It’s not worth coming for a bag of beans and, what else — another can of black beans? Basically. It’s not worth coming,” said Deborah Causey, who helps organize the food ministry at the church.

Causey said the church used to conduct food giveaways on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but they’ve had to cut back to only one time a week. And now they ask people in need of food to call first to make sure there is enough supply.

I was gifted John Mauldin’s newsletters early last year, his takes on what has been happening since them have been remarkably accurate.

They can’t grow the amount of popcorn it will take to live through the future.

LOL, remember how they laughed at the beginning of thread one, when I said that I would more than likely start a new thread at 5,000?

The 10,000 count comes too quickly.

It is good that you checked in, for we have no way of checking up on you, if you do not.

Stay safe and have fun.

America is already insane and will even more so, when the reality of this man’s plans reaches them.

Who ever thought we would see this here.

Was Terri only a test for what was coming?

Food for thought...

If Health Care Legislation they are considering is going to save so much money -

WHY do they have to raise taxes to pay for it????????????<<<

As the o would say “We Won”.

Think of all the money that is changing hands today, for some will pay to stop parts of it and others will pay to get their interests passed ............
