Batwoman is making her comic book comeback -as a red-haired, crime-fighting lesbian.
Billed as a 'lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night,' she replaces the Caped Crusader after he was killed off in a recent issue.
Batwoman -the alter ego of Kathy Kane -is clad in a figure-hugging black outfit and knee-high red stiletto boots.
She is Detective Comics first openly gay superhero and will stalk the means streets of Gotham City from June.
Writer Greg Rucka said the introduction of a gay character was 'long overdue'
'We have been waiting to unlock her,' he told the Comic Book Resources website.'Yes,she's a lesbian. She's also a redhead.
'It is an element of her character. It is not her character.
'If people are going to have problems with it,that's their issue. It's certainly not mine.
'My job is to write the best book I can, about a character that I think is exceptionally cool, that J.H. Williams (his co-writer) thinks is exceptionally cool, that DC Comics thinks is exceptionally cool and worthy of being the lead player in Detective Comics.
'Frankly, she should be judged on her own merits.'
Batwoman first emerged from the Batcave 50 years ago, appearing intermittently before she was eventually killed off in 1979.
She was originally invented as a love interest for Batman and first appeared in her present present incarnation two years ago, sparking a slew of publicity about her sexuality.
However, her outings to date have been sporadic and this is the first time she will be the lead character in comic
Batman, whose alter ego was multi-millionaire Bruce Wayne, was killed of in November.
He met his end in a grisly fireball after battling with his enemy Mangrove Pierce on a helicopter.

When does she hook up with Catwoman?
So it's okay with you, then, if people don't buy your comic, Mr. Rucka?
Fighting crime in high heels? Ooooooookay...
I for one am looking forward to the movie.
What’s funny is that most of the superhero coming out as gay characters do bomb. What makes it even funnier is when the writers then kill off the character they are deluged with the “You’re homophobic” hate mails. They can never treat the homosexual character like they would a regular character.
How are the sales of “Rawhide Kid” doing anyway?
PaMom is now sending herself to the time out corner...
It certainly will be when this character crashes and burns.
Then why does it have to be mentioned at all??
Eartha Kitt?
Bookmark.
Based on the many real lesbians I have known, I expected shorter hair and a more flannel-centric uniform.
The late Eartha Kitt was heterosexual, married a man, and bore children.
According to the comic, Batwoman is 5’-10” and she looks like she weighs about 145-pounds so Linsday would have to hit Inout Burger and Hollywood’s Gold gym to play her! :)
When do these douchebags realize that people want their superheroes to be caricatures of real life, NOT MORE "REAL" FOR #@^&$#. They love the Punisher because he's a parody of how pissed off pepole get from the indignity of life's small injustices. They love Superman because he's the all-powerful super fixer we all wish we could be. They DO NOT LIKE COMICS THAT MAKE YOUR STUPID PSEUDO-INTELLECTUAL SOCIAL COMMENTARY. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?
no way no how, this has no place in any batman line up continuity.
This is retaliation for all thos years when DC refused to allow the images used to suggest Batman and Robin were anything else other than a normal father and son type relationship. (normal other than the crime fighting at night party)
Eartha Kitt was beutiful and exuded hotness. She was also Catgirl and one of the villons.
It’s obvious in our paternalistic society a beutiful woman is so severly repressed that she can only be truely liberated if she is either a supervillin or a lesbian. Or so the obese woman with the man’s haircut told me in college.
