Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and from the creators of “Band of Brothers”, The Pacific is a a 10-part HBO mini-series which tells the intertwined stories of three Marines, Robert Leckie (played by James Badge Dale), Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello) and John Basilone (Jon Seda), during America’s battle with the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II.

Produced on a budget of more $150 million, and shot on location in Australia, the series follows (from an early press release) “The extraordinary experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day.”

If you are wondering about the books it's based on, "THE PACIFIC is based on the books “With the Old Breed,” by Eugene Sledge, which was hailed by historian Paul Fussell as “one of the finest memoirs to emerge from any war,” and “Helmet for My Pillow,” by Robert Leckie (recipient of the Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Annual Award), as well as original interviews conducted by the filmmakers. Continuing the World War II oral history work begun by his father Stephen E. Ambrose (author of the book “Band of Brothers”), Hugh Ambrose serves as a consultant on the miniseries."

If it's as good as Band of Brothers it will be worth seeing.

“With the Old Breed” is an incredible book, so the source material is good. The trailer looks good. They obviously aren’t skimping on things.

Ditto.

I thought “Band of Brothers” exceeded “Saving Private Ryan”..which was still pretty good.

"In the epic climax of the miniseries, Barack Obama descends from the heavens and ends the war by giving a really great speech."

Since it’s many of the same people who were behind “Band of Brothers”, it’ll be good. They did an exceptional job of following a small group of people while keeping things in context of the war itself and allowing people to see the big picture.

I was just talking to a torpedo bomber pilot from the carrier Enterprise yesterday, he was in the battle of Midway.

I personally think that “Band of Brothers” was better than “Ryan” because it worked in the reality of the experiences by those who lived them via the interviews and recollections of the actual survivors of “Easy”.

Spielberg is nuts. At least his financial backers are. It'll be interesting to see if this production makes a plug nickel.

He’s not nuts...Spielberg is dishonest as well.

Right after the Universal execs were backstabbed by him in the Dreamworks fiasco, studio execs are looking at him in a different light now. Ah well, I’ll pass judgement after I see episode 1.

Nuts for making money? Band of Brothers DVD sets sold over $200 million alone (and cost around $125 million to make). It was and possibly still is the all-time top selling TV-based DVD set.

Now that it's been released on Blu-Ray, it's constantly in Amazon's top 5 television Blu-Ray sets

Just watched the trailer. Joe Mazzello, who plays Eugene Sledge was the young boy, Tim Murphy in Jurassic Park. I thought he looked familiar.

Hopefully he doesn't follow politics too closely. the current state is a complete and total disservice to the man for what he gave for our freedom.

That was an obscure pick.

I was at his house and he and his wife were watching Midway on television he said he is 87 and among the last, at least here in San Diego where there used to be three of them.

He showed me his collection of medals and he also described something that he was doing when the Army launched from the USS Hornet to bomb Japan. I don’t remember what it was.
