Admit I didn’t read the rest. Who owns the property? Private owner or Big Brother? If it’s a private owner he should be compensated at the Walmart price and the ground preserved. If BB, preserve the battlefield, admit Lee should have won—the battle and the war—and find another spot for Walmart.

OK, you answered my question. Sounds like it’s not that close, and likely wouldn’t detract from the solemnity of the battlefield itself. It would probably be a good place for families to pick up picnic supplies before they head out for a day touring the battlefield!

I don't know the area or if this proposed development would actually interfere with an appreciation of what happened in the Battle of the Wilderness. That was an important battle, and at lest for the foreseeable future, it should be treated with care. But it seems obvious to me that as a country gets older, more and more places become 'historical.'

It's nice to preserve those places for future generations, but those generations also need places to create their own history. We can't just turn the world into a museum and tell people nothing can change.
