Gee, what a surprise... A wealthy Democrat in a position of power is taking advantage of the system and tries to claim ignorance when she's caught.
Detroit City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson paid only $68 in property taxes this year because city records say her well-kept, brick Tudor-style home doesn't exist. Although the home has occupied its west-side plot since 1926, city records have classified the parcel as an empty lot for the past decade.
Watson said she was unaware of the discrepancy until the Free Press contacted her. She said the change came before she was elected to City Council -- and without her involvement.
"I pay the taxes. All I know is I had a big drop when my house got hit hard by a tornado," she said. "We had great damage."

Watson calls property tax flap part of a ‘smear campaign’
City councilwoman JoAnn Watson held a press conference Sunday afternoon outside her Tudor-style home to clear the air over news reports of her greatly under-assessed brick house on the city’s west side which city records indicate has not existed for several years.
Watson, an outspoken critic of tax deadbeats and the city’s lack of getting its fair share in outstanding taxes from property owners and businesses, learned last week from newspaper reporters she had been receiving quite a tax break from the city. In 2008, according to city tax records, Watson was assessed only $67.97 in property taxes for her brick home located in the Russell Woods subdivision on the city’s west side. Homeowners owning comparable addresses in the neighborhood pay more than $5,600 a year.
“I’ve been a target of a smear campaign,” Watson told reporters gathered outsider her home on Sturtevant off Dexter Sunday. “... I pay my bills and whatever I was billed, I paid.”
This was posted before, but the info is worth a bump.
Do you lurkers see what is happening?
Pressure mounting to curb Detroit Council’s $6.2M budget
Councilwoman JoAnn Watson was the biggest spender from May to December with $337,347, in large part because she hired 13 additional employees — none who earned more than $23 an hour.
Oh, DETROIT!
Being in Missouri, I always wondered where “Tornado Alley” was...
Every time I think New Orleans is bad, an elected democrat in Detroit opens their mouth. LOL
I wonder if she voted for Obama.
Just another lying, cheating piece of DemocRAT scum. Not only will nothing happen to this trash, but she will be elected by the idiots in Detroit over and over again.
Everyone in Detroit should get together and hang her. You would have to be totally stupid to think a $68 tax bill was right!!!! I get taxed more than that just for the little tiny storage shed on my lot!
Not only did she vote for Obama, but she thinks Obama is God!
From the photo posted in the link, that home would be worth ALOT more than $40,000 to $60,000 where I come from. I would think even for west side Detroit it would be worth more, but a building is only really worth what someone will pay for it.
“...city records have classified the parcel as an empty lot for the past decade....”
So, is she going to be billed for the under-appraisal for the last Decade? Or, is that going to be written off?
Sorry to hear the poor lady got hit by a tornado. I know what that is like. Took me a couple months to get my house fixed back up, but I don’t remember getting a break on my taxes. Those Michigan tax collectors must be really nice guys. Maybe I should move there (NOT).
