William & Mary mascot ideas include an asparagus

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The College of William & Mary in Virginia is looking for a mascot and ideas have ranged from a feathered horse to an asparagus stalk.

The school said Monday more than 400 nominations have been submitted. William & Mary for decades was known as the Indians, but the school changed its nickname to Tribe in the 1980s.

The NCAA ruled in 2006 that the college could keep the Tribe nickname but its feathered logo was demeaning to Native Americans and had to go.

The school's athletic teams will still be called the Tribe, but the college wants a mascot that may , or may not , match the nickname.

The asparagus stalk supporter notes that if served with cheese, the vegetable represents the school colors.

The Seminoles don’t seem to have a problem with FSU. I guess profit sharing can ease the pain of cultural offense.

Did we actually ask any Indians? Or is it the duty of the NCAA to determine what is or is not demeaning?

That’s a pretty ferocious looking asparagus. Might be terrifying to the Vegetarians on the opposing football team....

I would suggest a Frenchman, wearing a beret and waving a white flag, since they have surrendered completely..........

The Tribe?

That covers a lot of ground ...

Barbarians came in "tribes". How about a guy with long hair, a braided beard, leather armour, and a big sword?

There were twelve Tribes of Israel. You could go old-school: robes, sandals and Torah scroll, or new-age: black suit, black hat, and glasses.

Totally off the wall:

Laurence Tribe.

The Zulu are a tribe. Can we go with something on that motif? (ooo, I'm getting in trouble for that)

Or maybe instead of the warriors from 17th-19th century Indians, maybe we can get something more like the Indians who deal with the modern Bureau of Indian Affairs.

There is a Community College in the Phoenix area that has an Artichoke as a mascot.

The Fighting Sioux of ND haven't had much trouble in this area, as well.

Particularly since Ralph Engelstadt (really rich donor, the hockey arena is named after him) threatened to pull his contributions if the school name was changed.

Money talks, BS walks.

Out there, wasn’t there some bit about the ‘Fighting Whiteys’ or ‘Mighty Whiteys’ or something similar?

The Tree? I thought they were the Cardinals.

St. John’s went from Redmen to Red Storm, and, if I’m not mistaken, Syracuse shortened their name from Orangemen to Orange.
