Angry taxpayer proposes 'radical' changes to state seal (Washington State) Language warning
The Seattle P.I. ^ | February 2, 2010 | Martha King

An Orting man, apparently upset over the state's taxes, has proposed some major changes to the Washington state seal.

(edit)

Washington state has "lost a significant portion of our industrial base resulting in a high unemployment rate" while the state government "continues to grow and spend at unsupportable rates by increasing taxes at a time when our citizens can least afford it," Vaughn claims in the affidavit.

Washington is considered the leader of the "Terrible Ten" states for tax by the Tax Justice Digest, Vaughn states, because of "the extraordinary degree to which they have shifted the cost of funding public investments to their very poorest residents."

Vaughn claims the bottom 20 percent of the income scale in the state pays nearly six times as much of their earnings in taxes as do the wealthy, while the middle class pays up to three and a half times as much.

"At this point, just like a lot of people (I'm) starting to think, 'Enough's enough,'" said Vaughn, a small business owner. "I'm just trying to make a point and educate the voters on just how bad our taxes are."

The 'language warning' is due to one particular word in the description of the proposed Seal as well as the word's umm...use...in this context, which although may not technically violate Free Republic rules, it paints a rather 'earthy' picture that I would prefer not to bring into the living rooms of nice folks.   Since the source has to be edited for posting at FR anyway, I thought that I would simply leave that for people to read who wanted to click on the link and read the full story.  That being said, the word is a legitimate anatomical term but used in a way that might cause discomfort for some.  You should click on the link if you aren't easily offended, because I think that Mr. Vaughn makes some great points and is illustrating the frustrations that many of us feel here in Washington State.

""Jim Vaughn, a retired military officer,"

This man comes across as a right wing extremist.

Big Sis Jan(et) Napolitano told me to be aware of these "retired" military guys.

Lock Vaughn up, he is an enemy of the State.

Agreed.  Lock him up in my cell because he sounds like a great guy that I could probably learn a lot from.  We could organize a Tea Party in prison, anyway.

We are all not that far away from being thrown into a jail or detention center.

................................................Big Government

What Mr. Vaughn says is true.
I had a very good supplier / manufacturer from Washing
state who just recently packed up their factory and moved to China.
Told me it was that or bankruptcy.
I don't by from them anymore.

Spokane resident 1975. I recognized at that time that the tax structure, and politics, was anti citizen. Things have not improved. Obviously! Beautiful state, if you can afford to live there. It appears that this particular point in time is going to result in a reality check for most state governments, and the word sustainability, is going to take on a whole new meaning, unrelated to radical environmentalism.

Of course Washington state is in a mess. The RATS stole the governors election. They know they can get away with it, why worry about what some irrelevant voters say?

Sorry to hear about your supplier and I hope that you’ve been able to make other arrangements.

I hope that you're right, but I haven't seen any real evidence of it yet...as long as they feel that they can endlessly raise taxes with impunity here and elsewhere, we'll keep on the downward spiral.

Thanks.

You're welcome :-)

We found a supplier in Ohio.

Glad to hear it.  That's one of the innumerably wonderful things about Capitalism....when a real need exists, it will usually be filled if the Government will just get out of the way.

“That's one of the innumerably wonderful things about Capitalism.”

Free Market. ;<)

Thing is the word capitalism (like teabagger) is disparaging, derogatory pejorative.

The word first appeared in 1820 and became well known
in 1848 when Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels used the term
capitalist (Kapitalist) in The Communist Manifesto
(Das Kapital) to refer to ownership of private property.
A system which of course Marx wanted to abolish.

Instead of calling it by the pejorative it would be nice
if we called it by it's real name, Private Property and Free Markets.
