Vanity: advice wanted from Freepers about valuing/selling German Luger/holster

Posted on 02/04/2010 5:40:38 PM PST by HGSW0904

My father's father served in WWII, and brought home with him a German Luger (with holster). My father wondered how he'd go about finding its value, and I told him I'd try to see if I could get some answers here.

So...any ideas on where to take it or what to do to find the value? Or, suggestions on how to sell it?

Thanks!

Are all the parts matching serial numbers or is it a pistol made of of different gun parts. that is one place to begin. If all the numbers match then it is worth more than if not. Is it a long barrel artillery model. Does he have the butt stock to go with it? There are several thing that make it a shooter or a collectors piece.

Find a forum about German Lugers and ask there. I’m sure that they will want to know markings, dates, and other minutia about it. I have seen rare ones in good shape go as high as $30,000, more common ones about $2k..

Here is a link for a company specializing the the sale and purchase of Lugers:

http://www.phoenixinvestmentarms.com/

I've never done business with them, so this is just for your information.

Gunbroker.com will give you some idea.

I typed in “German Luger” and several came up from about $400 to $2,250 and I also saw a holster at $225.

Look at those for sale and compare condition, most have descriptions and pictures.

If it’s functional you may want to keep it for future use. Just sayin’.

Go to www.Empirearms.com
they can give you a fair idea and may even
be interested in it themselves.

They are in florida, where are you?

They consistantly sell high quality pieces,
their prices are high but you never have to
worry about the quality of what you are buying.

Great question! Left me a German Mauser 7.65 (32) that is is in pristine condition! Holster with two clips. They are considered pocket pistols.

If it's your grandfather's why sell it? Why not hand it down.

I think it would be something special.

As you might have figured by now there is a huge difference in value depending on condition, provenance, rarity etc.

My Father also brought a Luger home from WWII. Unfortunately he sold it to a cousin before I was old enough to hardly remember it. I do recall him killing a gator with it when I was around 5.

Daddy obtained his in an interesting way. After the war ended Daddy’s outfit went into Berlin. My Father was feeding a couple of German kids from the mess line.

He could go through as often as he wanted. One day he asked Fritz if he could get him a Luger. The kid took off running and in about an hour came back with a sack. Inside was a luger, holster and spare mag. It was a 1917 DWM model. not a particularly valuable one. Still I wish I had it.

It’s worth about $53.72 on the open market, but, since we’re Freeperfriends, I’ll give you $55.00. If you pressure me I’ll make an even grand. Or, if you don’t need the money, just keep it in the family, you lucky dog you.

I’d keep it.
Would be fun for you to find out the value though.

The magazine “Guns & Ammo” has a column in which an expert evaluates the value of guns owned by readers who provide info on their revolvers, pistols, rifles, shotguns. Most likely, there are other magazines that do this.
