When Star Wars first came out, it was a quantum leap beyond anything I had ever seen in a theater before. I ended up watching it 26 times in the theater. I have not had that experience since - until today. In 3D and Imax, I saw Avatar.
Yes, I know the liberal "love the trees BS" message people say it has, but it is science fantasy. Sure, the parallels between the indigenous "people" of the planet and the American Indians and simple tribal cultures of planet earth and their various forms of nature worship were thick enough to cut with a knife. But...this was not earth. In this fantasy world, their beliefs were based on the reality of their world.
But the imagination of whoever created this story was truly appreciated by me. It was a visual extravaganza, and twisted in some very good and interesting ways, regarding how another world may be different in ways most of us never thought of. The political message was stupid, right down to their using the phrase "shock and awe" to describe the attack. But stripping away the ludicrous attempt at an over-simplified - and terribly wrongheaded - cultural parallel with our world, the movie was an amazing thing to behold.
It used CGI in subtle but incredibly effective was that, just as we have been told in various reviews of the movie, a true "next generation" application of the technology. Actually, it may have skipped a couple of generations.
I give credit where credit is due. There was not a boring moment in the film. The pace was fast, but not too fast. The story was compelling and there were very emotional moments in the film. It kept me interested for the entire 180 minutes. I would recommend it to anyone.
Ignore the "man is in the forest" nonsense and this will blow you away. Skip the popcorn and soda. You won't need it. Just sit back and prepare to almost literally enter another world - A world of incredible danger, beauty, and adventure, the memory of which you will carry for the rest of your life.
I’ve been meaning to see it as well, it sounds awesome.
How does it rate on the Joe Bob Briggs scale (number of explosions, number of breats)?
It was visually impressive.
But the movie itself?
Not very good.

Leni Riefenstahl’s “Triumph of the Will” was also a very well-made and artistic film. Since Hitler is now safely dead, I’d rather watch that.
Explosions? People or aliens snuffing it in a particularly interesting way?
I thought it was ok. The story was silly and certain parts were unexplainable to me, shooting with guns?? a taped together “daisy cutter”... the CGI was pretty cool, i loved the flying scenes, the dragons etc...
overall i gave it a C...

Get past the message and focus on the movie and it’s quite an experience. I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed it also. You could look at the corporation behind the evil as a government run one like GM. There were a lot of cluse that they were a government run entity, like Obama Motors. People tend to miss the fact that the soldiers were mercenaries, not US soldiers. Their loyalty was to their pay, not to a country.
Basically, turn off the sound and play a list of your favourite music and turn this into a really long music video.
I loved it. I recognized the liberal love the trees stuff too, but just let it go and enjoyed the scenery and the story.
I wasn’t going to see it. For many of the reasons explained above. I went last Sunday and have been mind blown ever since. This isn’t just a movie. It is a technological mind twisting marvel. Put cotton in your ears if you have to and just go LOOK at it. Remember the people that were depressed because they wanted to live on Pandora. NO ONE will not want to visit that world. IT IS BREATH TAKING.
I hate the PC nonsense, but guys and gals, if you don’t see this on the big screen, you’re missing it. Most of all you’re missing being 12 again.

The 3D animation was awesome. It was like you could reach out and touch what you were seeing, or you could walk right into the scene.
The storyline and characters, Zzzzzzzzz.
What might be cool is to just listen to your favorite music on headphones while watching the movie.
