February 22, 2010 marked the thirtieth anniversary of the 'Miracle on Ice,' the day Minnesota's Herb Brooks led the United States hockey team to defeat the supposedly unbeatable Soviet Union team in a medal-round game at the Olympics in Lake Placid.

Retired photographer Denny DeGriselles shot the game for 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.

He shared his memories of the game with Steve Shaw.

If you haven't seen it, go see "Miracle":

"Miracle is a 2004 American biographical sports film about the United States men's hockey team, led by head coach Herb Brooks, that won the gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympics. The USA team's victory over the heavily favored Soviet team in the medal round was dubbed the Miracle on Ice. Miracle was directed by Gavin O'Connor and written by Eric Guggenheim."

I saw the Soviet team make minced meat out of the New York Rangers that year (and the Rangers were a good team). No one is going to EVER convince me that the Soviets didn’t throw that game in order to try (unsuccessfully) to get us to go to the Moscow Olympics that summer.

I think Brooks died in a single car accident, didn’t he?

At the age of 66, Brooks died in a single car accident on the afternoon of August 11, 2003, near Forest Lake, Minnesota, on Interstate 35.[9] It is believed that he fell asleep behind the wheel before the accident after driving all night, and neither drugs nor alcohol was responsible.

The Soviets played their old game against the US college players and were out skated and out played by new, fresh legs that were inspired by Herbie....

He pissed them off to the point that they won to prove him wrong about them...

Many forget that this was an all or nothing match for the US team. If team USA lost there were no medals in their future thanks to an earlier loss.

When they played the Rangers just before that, the Rangers barely even got their sticks on the puck, the Soviets TOTALLY CONTROLLED it. Sure, miracles are possible, but having seen that game, I’m convinced that not ALL miracles are possible.

And no one is EVER going to convince some people that the Earth is not flat.

That was quite a game. And Mondale was there, some connection with the 1960 team.
