A 27-year-old man trying to set up an antenna for a pirate radio station was electrocuted in the backyard of his home Sunday, a Fort Lauderdale police spokesman said.

Authorities were called to the home on the 1100 block of Northwest 18th Court about noon, said the spokesman, Frank Sousa. Details were sketchy, but authorities said the electrocution appeared to be accidental.

I remember when on-roof TV antennas had this huge graphic with the words YOU WILL BE KILLED and then all the ways that might happen.

I guess they don’t put that on radio antennae.

It sounds like he touched a 5 kilovolt local line (the last level of transmission before the pole pig that steps down to the household 120-0-120).

He leaves behind a wife and five children.

He must have been holding the antenna and it came in contact with the service line to the house.

It reminds me of an incident in Ocean County, NJ almost 20 years ago.

A man had saved up and purchased an aluminum masted boat. There was some assembly required. He and his son were going down the street to the boat launch pushing the boat on a carrier, and the whole neighborhood came out, excited for this man to realize his dream.

The mast touched a power line and the man and his son were killed instantly.

Be careful out there Freepers—a moment of carelessness is not overlooked by electricity or gravity.
