BREMERTON, Wash. - Washington and Oregon are banning the sale of phosphate-laden dishwasher detergent starting Thursday. Familiar brands are still available but they will have lower levels of phosphates. Experts say phosphates promote plant growth and may degrade water quality in lakes and streams. "It's more effective and less expensive to decrease what goes down the drain than it is to treat it at the plant. This way, we're all part of the solution," said Washington Rep. Timm Ormsby, D-Spokane, told the Kitsap Sun. Ormbsy sponsored the 2006 bill to limit phosphates in dishwasher detergents. The ban has already been in place in Spokane and Whatcom counties in Washington state since 2008. The Oregon Legislature passed a law in 2009 that lowered the phosphorous limit for automatic dishwasher detergents from 8.7 percent to 0.5 percent.

They ban this but still dump flouride in the water.
Geniuses.
More money for phosphate dishwasher detergent smugglers from Idaho...
I thought phosphates were done away with years ago.
They won’t go after illegal aliens but I bet they’ll be looking for phosphate smugglers on the highways. lol.
Yippee! ... We’re SAVED!

Isn’t that what a treatment plant is for? Aren’t the people already sharing in being part of the solution by paying for water treatment?
Yeah, I thought phosphate detergents were long gone. It really hurt the black light industry.
The low phosphate detergents really stink. They ruin your glassware, putting a milky film on everything, even if you have a good water softener, these detergents make everything disposable. Wash and dry anything of value by hand.
Ill see your Phosphates and raise you a Hairspray
“State Attorney General Jerry Brown said Tuesday a court judgment against New York-based Pro’s Choice Beauty Care Inc. blocks the company from selling “pollution-causing” products that exacerbate respiratory illnesses.”

They were. In laundry detergent.
I remember my mom complaining bitterly about the lack of cleaning ability in clothes detergents after the ban.
The nurses in the hospital where I used to work switched to washing their uniforms in dishwasher detergent to keep them white. Now I guess that’s gone too, at least in WA.
It won’t belong before all we have to clean with is vinegar water.
T.S.P.. available at Home Depot...etc....TRISODIUM PHOSPHATE. Screw the politicians,, I want clean dishes and underwear!!!!
Nam Vet
Look closely. Some products have a trade name TSP but don’t have tsp in them.
And BTW. You don’t need phosphates to clean dishes.
Let the dog lick them first. Then into the dishwasher. (g)
Since it can be treated at the treatment plant...where is the big problem.
There were the cowboys out on the range sitting around the campfire. Pappy was scooping some chili out of the pot onto the cowboys' plates. One of them notices some old food still on the plate he's about to be served. He takes the issue up with Pappy, "HEY! I want a clean plate!" Pappy says, "THAT'S AS CLEAN AS WATER GETS IT!" Well Bill just isn't having this and says, "OH YEAH? SHOW ME!"
So Pappy takes the plate and holds it out, he yells "Hey WATER!" And a hound comes up and starts licking the plate....
Except in Dishwasher detergent which needed this extra cleaning power to get food and grease off dishes.
