IN the week of the 30th anniversary of his death, friends and family of comedy genius Peter Sellers are to gather in Brighton tonight to celebrate his life and career.

His eldest daughter Sarah is joined by Sellers’ Pink Panther co-star Burt Kwouk, Inspector Clouseau’s Chinese man-servant Cato in the hit films. Guests at the Duke of York’s Picture House will watch a screening of Sellers’ film Dr Strangelove.

Can Sellers be credited with the comedic trick of playing multiple roles in the same movie (black comedy: “Dr. Strangelove, not-so-black comedy: “The Mouse that Roared”?

The same trick as used by Eddie Murphy and Tyler Perry, to name a few?

Alec Guinness did it in “Kind Hearts and Coronets,” so I think he wins.

Boy, it doesn’t sound like it’s easy to find one of Sellers’ friends when they have to dig up the actor who played Cato! It reminds of an episode of the Simpsons that featured an awards show where one of the presenters was “the son of the guy who played Huggy Bear”.

I was enforcing a modified time-out on my 10 year old daughter and MADE her watch a couple Pink Panther movies with me. 20 years later we still imitate Clouseau and Kato and “karate” be-umps unto each other’s head.

Being There (See Tagline) is oddly prescient of Obama

Most of Seller’s friends have probably passed on, too.

I've not followed the link, yet, but if the movie "The Live and Death of Peter Sellers" is in the slightest bit true, I'm surprized they found anyone.

I love the movie, “Being There.” Chauncey Gardner, the simpleton in “Being There” is MUCH smarter than Obama!

Actually, I’m reading “Winds of War” by Herman Wouk right now. Fantastic book about the days, months, years before the start of World War II. Obama reminds me of Hitler in so many ways. But again, I don’t think he is as intelligent as Hitler. And I do believe Hitler was demon-possessed. His involved in the occult is well-documented. Most of the inner core of the Nazis were deeply involved in the occult. I wouldn’t be surprised if the current occupant of the White House has dabbled a bit.

...“Dr. Strangelove, not-so-black comedy...

Sellers was going to play the Slim Pickens role, as well, but hurt himself on the set.

Nice pull. Son of Huggy Bear. Ha.

Sellers didn't have a ton of friends. He had zero personality, and was mentally unbalanced. Had no idea until I rented the DVD "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers" several years back.

It was a real eye-opener.

Most definitely. I was absolutely shocked the first time I saw it. It's become one of my favourite movies.

"Being There (See Tagline) is oddly prescient of Obama"

I could not disagree more!

When Chauncey Gardiner walks on the water at the end of the movie you realize he is capable of anything simply because he doesn't know what he doesn't know.

Obama on the other hand THINKS he knows everything. Where Chauncey was filled with simple minded humility Obama is filled with arrogance and ego. The two could not be more different.

The scene of his uh, “reaction” when his little boy painted his car is still disturbing, several years later.

I’ve never seen “The Life and Death of Peter Sellers” but I’ve consistently heard that the man was at best a difficult personality.
