Climate change not linked to African wars
Nature ^ | 6 September 2010 | Quirin Schiermeier

Claims that global warming can drive civil unrest are hotly disputed.

In his popular 2008 book Climate Wars, the US journalist and military historian Gwynne Dyer laid out a daunting scenario. Climate change would put growing pressure on fresh water and food over the coming century, he wrote, triggering social disorder, mass migration and violent conflict.

But is there real proof of a link between climate change and civil war — particularly in crisis-ridden parts of Africa — as many have claimed?

No, says Halvard Buhaug, a political scientist with the Peace Research Institute Oslo in Norway. In research published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, he finds virtually no correlation between climate-change indicators such as temperature and rainfall variability and the frequency of civil wars over the past 50 years in sub-Saharan Africa — arguably the part of the world that is socially and environmentally most vulnerable to climate change. "The primary causes of civil war are political, not environmental," says Buhaug.

Africans have been slaughtering eachother since the first one figured out how to sharpen a stick.

They always have, and likely, always will.

Actually, for a while there they used to sell each other into slavery but the market for that has dried up.

I posit the bold theory that if Africa was suddenly turned into a frozen, tundra-like wasteland, the inhabitants would still be killing one another in the exact same manner, but they’d be bundled up, kinda like Eskimos.

The most racist “people” on the planet.

Hey! Lets hate joe and his family....isn’t it time for a genocide?

They will continue that forever. The have a fascination with democracy, but as long as the tribal chiefdoms continue, the ignorance will continue. No one can get ahead of the chiefs. Not the chief by night, nor the chief by day.

Oh, they still do (cocoa and diamond trade), but it's strictly for domestic markets. Most of the rest of the world finds the practice at odds with civilized society.

Yes they are.

It's funny, I couldn't tell a Tutsi from a Hutu from an Ibo from a Tuareg.

They all live in structures I wouldn't keep tools in, create "art" that really could be done by a third grader, create nothing useful, and eat what any Westerner would discard.

Yet, somehow, they can detect differences severe enough to warrant genocide.

Where do wars, battles and quarrels in Africa and the rest of the world come from? God says they are NOT caused by man-made "Global Warming":

"What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source YOUR PLEASURES (the Greek word for "pleasures" is "hēdonais;" the Greek word our English word "Hedonism" comes from) that wage war in your members?

YOU LUST and DO NOT HAVE; SO YOU COMMIT MURDER. You are ENVIOUS and CANNOT OBTAIN; SO YOU FIGHT and QUARREL.

You ASK and DO NOT RECEIVE, BECAUSE YOU ASK WITH W R O N G M O T I V E S, SO THAT YOU MAY SPEND IT ON YOUR PLEASURES." (James 4:1-3, Emphasis added)

God's Word tells us exactly where “fights” (lit., “state of war,” polemoi) and “quarrels” (lit., individual disputes or “battles,” machai) come from; they come from WITHIN OURSELVES, not man-made Global Warming! The apostle James answers the question: the state of WAR and BATTLES come: "from YOUR DESIRES that BATTLE WITHIN YOU." Conflicts, war and battles spring up out of (ek) out of our inner sensual lusts or "pleasures" (hēdonōn; cf. v. 3)!

James 4:2 says that war is the direct result of man's illicit lusts: our greed, our envy!

OUR LUST for POSSESSIONS, POSITION, and POWER brings about MURDER. Man's COVETOUSNESS and GREED results in the FRUSTRATION of NOT OBTAINING OUR hotly pursued DESIRES. This all leads to the “quarrels” and “fights,” and wars that “battle” against people, mentioned in James 4 verse 1.

In James 4 verse 3 the Apostle does not say that the reason mans lusts are not fulfilled is because people failed to ask God to gratify those desires. He does NOT say "You DO NOT HAVE BECAUSE YOU DO NOT ASK GOD" (Emphasis added). In verse 3 James says that one reason a believer does not receive what he asks for is because they are asking with WRONG MOTIVES: they are asking in order to "spend" (this word could be translated “SQUANDER”) what they receive from God on their "PLEASURES" (“pleasures” is the same Greek word hēdonais found in verse 1)!

Where do wars, battles and quarrels in Africa and the rest of the world come from? They come from within men:

1) Men are envious and greedy, they lust for possessions, position and power.

2) They may or may not ask God to fulfill their illicit desires. If they do ask, God refuses to answer their lust-centered prayers because God will never provide for “hedonistic squandering".

3) As a result of THEIR covetousness and greed; WANTING and NOT getting what THEY WANT, men then fight and go to war and battle in order to have THEIR LUSTS and THEIR DESIRES FOR POSSESSIONS, POSITION AND POWER fulfilled.

God says, fictional man-made "Global Warming" has absolutely NOTHING to do with the conflicts in Africa or anywhere else.

James 4:2 says that war is the direct result of man's illicit lusts: our greed, our envy!

I agree envy is the root cause of theft, adultery, murder, destruction, war, and voting Democrat. Greed is really just an extreme form of envy. Leftists fall into greed much more often than conservatives. When leftists call others greedy, they are really projecting their own envy. The best way to counter the emotion of envy is by invoking the emotion of shame, but it's not perfect. Even Jesus didn't have a foolproof answer. He was nailed to the cross in envy.
