I was yelling at the TV early on when Sherlock was beating a corpse with a riding crop, and then asked the lab assistant to tell him what bruises developed.

But other than that it wasn’t too bad. I’ll watch more just because I like the Watson character.

In the original stories, the day H&W met, Holmes *was at a mortuary, and he *did* beat a corpse for proof that a beating after death would not raise welts. But my memory does not come back as being as intense a beating, nor asking a morgue employee to report the results to him. He stayed to see for himself.

Oh I don’t know...Playing a functional drunk, by Depp, would be playing to type. Wouldn’t it?

The BBC has pretty much already adapted “everything” for TV. Now they go back and remake what they’ve already shown, and it’s usually not that good. All too often, the remakes reflect a Britain that also isn’t what it once was. But I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later.

I just finished watching it.

The off-the wall quirkiness is explained by the fact that Mark Gatiss (who played Mycroft) is a co-creator and writer on the series. Ever watched “The League of Gentlemen”?

As soon as I heard the announcer state that Holmes would be living in the 21st Century, I changed the channel.

In with three criminally clever whodunits, A Study in Pink (October 24), The Blind Banker (October 31) and The Great Game (November 7), consulting detective Sherlock Holmes teams up with former army doctor John Watson to solve a dizzying array of crimes with his signature deductive reasoning.

Watched last week and was impressed by the update after being skeptical when I first read about it.
It seems they have made Dr. Watson a little edgier and more lethal. Will he be packing “heat” every time they go out on a case?????

Powell & Loy made 14 pictures together and the public at large thought they were married in real life.

In the original stories he may not have carried his “revolver” all the time, but he did quite often when there was any perceived danger. I don’t see a reason why they would change that, other than having “updated” his weapon to a modern military semi-automatic side arm.

I DVR’d the last episode, finally had a chance to watch it, and was absolutely blown away. Acting is great, story does a nice job of blending the original story with modern times, and I think it was faithful to Conan Doyle’s vision of Holmes. I’m planning on watching the other two episodes on line and am looking forward to season two.
