No one knows exactly how big the fragment was, but it blew a hole the size of a football through the windshield. It struck Jo Maureen Fisher in the head, sailed between her preschoolers, hit the rear window and shattered it too, flying out of the truck's cab never to be found.
Wounded in the most random of ways, John Fisher's 33-year-old wife died the next day. Today, he is a single dad trying to balance work with child care and all the things she used to do.

This is the problem with government built and run highways.
A 2x4 fell from a pick up truck and crashed through a car window and cut the jugular of a high school acquaintance. He bled to death before he could receive treatment.
Random freak accidents do occur, and are never easy to accept.
Very sad. All sorts of random things can happen, but this definitely sounds like negligence on the part of the state responsible for maintaining the road.
I hope the husband can sue, because he should. It’s not going to bring his wife back, but it might get him enough money to help out and it might make the state more responsible and prevent a similar occurrence in the future.
Interesting how Mr. Fisher is always referred to as John Fisher but Ms. Dick is always referred to as Dick. Sounds like the author is either 14 and enjoys writing her last name or thinks she is responsible for the tragedy.
Texas used to have the best roads in the country but now days they’re just as bad as other states’ which are also falling into a sad state of repair. It’s common these days to just pour in that tar mixture for a quick repair knowing full well it’s not going to last for any time. Why the crews can’t fix pot holes correctly the first time is just government waste.
Especially governments (mainly federal) that fail to control spending, offer FREE medical care, college, food, welfare payments, child-care services, unemployment checks, etc., etc., etc. FOR PEOPLE HERE ILLEGALLY (BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT SECURE OUR BORDERS!) and are now BANKRUPT to a point where they can no longer repair or replace deteriorating infrastructure.
Until we take out the Washington trash we stupidly missed this year, it ain’t gonna get better any time soon. More AMERICAN CITIZENS will die.
Here in north Texas, our shifting soil creates many problems, not the least of which is cracked roads/streets. Your homes foundation will crumble if not cared for, and driving the streets is like riding a bucking horse.
A few years ago a tourist going over Carson Spur(Sierra Nevadas in Northern CA)had a rock roll down just as he crested the spur and it crashed through his windshield and killed his wife.
I’m a volunteer fire fighter, a few years ago we got a call for a car hit in the windshield with a piece of the road.
This is what happened, a semi-truck kicked up a chunck of road from a bridge deck, sent it into the windshield of the car following. The driver was struck in the chest with a piece of concrete that weighed about 10 pounds. Right in the chest!
His brother managed to stop the car and a passerby motorist started CPR. We arrived on scene very quickly and took over, but there was not a whole lot that we could do for that particular patient in the field.
After that call, I signed up for EMT school.
Sounds like some good driving.
I also have heard of rock falls crashing the windshield of an RV - killing the passenger just as a retired couple began their trip celerating his retirement.
tragic.
A number of years ago a close friend of mine, one of the finest conservative activists in Iowa, Leroy Corey, was killed when a propane tank came off a flatbed truck and struck his vehicle. He had absolutely no time to respond. His fiancee, who was riding in the passenger seat, was injured pretty badly as well.
Be careful out there, FRiends!
What kind of soil do you have and how do you care for your foundation to prevent problems?
(I don't live in Texas but I am noticing some reasons I should learn about this.)
Good save man!
up north we call em "road gators"
mostly occur in hot weather when recapped tires lose their tread
especially scary if you're driving a roller skate like my Saturn
I can imagine. Fortunately for me I was in my own trusty V-8 Full Size K2500 4X4 PU!
Presence of mind is a valuable commodity. It will save your life more often than not.
Good on you for keeping your cool.
RIP.
I’ve driven that stretch of I-20 many times. It has been in terrible shape for years. There’s absolutely no excuse for a major interstate to be in such horrible condition for such a long time. Shame on the Alabama highway department.
You have to water the foundation constantly to prevent movement of the soil. Most of us have soaker hoses that are buried around the perimeter of the house that provides a constant drip of water.
It’s not unusual to have cracked foundation that costs thousands to repair, and the repairs are expensive and a total nightmare.
It start with cracks in the walls, doors that stick or can’t be opened/closed at all, wide gaps in the bricks and mortar.
The soil moves a large amount with changes in moisture and that causes to roads to buckle and break.
It’s not as bad as I may have made it seem, but it is a problem that new residents must learn quickly or suffer a multi-thousand dollar bill for repairs.
