Apple's iPhone 4 wins Best Mobile Device award at Mobile World Congress

Apple didn't attend Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, but it took the event's top award for a mobile device.

The event, a major confab of the mobile industry, has been virtually ignored by Apple in much the same way as the more general Consumer Electronics Show held in January. Apple not only fails to show at both events, but also appears to leak news or hold press events of its own that tend to overshadow the announcements of competing firms.

Judges didn't hold that against the company however, calling iPhone 4 "Best Mobile Device," saying that it has a "great screen, sharp design, fantastic materials, and phenomenal ecosystem for app developers. In a tight race, the iPhone 4 built on the success of its predecessors to set the pace for smartphones."

A separate award for Device Manufacturer of the Year went to Taiwan's HTC, of which judges said, "this company has built its market presence from nowhere, with fresh branding and marketing and a strong portfolio of devices across many platforms. In particular, it has proven an exceptionally popular and enduring phone manufacturer. With great communication and good customer service, this is a well-deserved award."

Also cited was a "Highly Commended" note for the HTC Desire, which judges said "set the bar for Android phones across much of the world in 2010. Packed with great features, this is an enduring product that has performed consistently well."

App awards

Awards for "Best Mobile App" and "App of the Year on the Apple Platform" went to Rovio/Clickgamer/Chillingo for Angry Birds, with judges saying "this is the 50 million plus-selling app that catapulted the benchmark for mobile gaming higher than ever, it is innovative too in terms of in-application monetisation."

Other platforms were awarded a specific App of the Year award. For RIM BlackBerry, it was RIM's own BlackBerry Messenger, of which was said, "the benchmark for real-time, mobile instant messaging application that offers deep integration with the phone’s address book and media gallery."

Similarly, Google took the app award for the Android platform with Google Maps, with judges noting, "this has been one of the most frequently updated applications on the market, and the latest iteration has made it simply one of the best mobile apps out there today."

For Nokia's platform, Herocraft & InnerActive's Zum Zum was awarded, with the citation “boasting captivating game-play, attractive graphics and simple rules. Ranked the number one game in Ovi Store in 2010, generating over six million game plays per month at its height.”

Previous winners

Last year, the event awarded Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs "Mobile Personality of the Year," but gave the Best Mobile Device award to the HTC Hero, the first Android model to incorporate the company's Sense UI.

HTC subsequently released an update for the award winning Hero to Android 2.1, but indicated that it would not offer an upgrade to Android 2.2. A variety of carriers worldwide have refused to distribute the Android 2.1 update despite HTC making it available. In the US, Sprint announced a 2.2 update for the phone but then reneged, saying it would only offer the update to its HTC EVO users.

I just got my iPhone 4 this past weekend and I love it. Verizon has excellent connectivity and network speed. Verizon’s network speed is far higher than AT&Ts. For the apps I use, and they are fairly heavy weight data apps, the difference is night and day. The iPhone 4 has significant improvements of over the iPhone 3GS and was worth the cost.

P.S. The things I love about the 4 are:

1. Screen resolution is much higher and therefore crisper and clearer. I thought the 3 had good resolution but the 4 is even better.

2. High resolution camera and video camera. HD resolution.

3. Additional front mounted camera for video conferencing.

4. Very bright flash/LED, which also makes for an excellent flashlight as well as a camera flash and video camera light.

5. Fast. Much faster than the 3.

6. Phone Tethering to laptop for broadband speed. Verizon only bills for the days in the month tethering is actually used and that cost is just $20 a month, so a daily charge is about $0.65 a day.

7. Physical dimensions are swuare so it is far easier to hold onto than the 3’s Dove bar feel.

8. Solid metal buttons. Nice improvement over the plastic ones of the 3. Tactile feel.

9. Sound quality. It is a phone, so that is important. The quality between our iPhone 4 phones is far better than it was with the iPhone 3. Maybe that is Verizon’s network, but I suspect the phone is a primary improvement as well.

Actually, CodeToad, AT&T's 3G is faster than Verizon's... almost twice as fast. AT&T doesn't have the depth of penetration of it's 3G that Verizon has, nor has it rolled out as much 3.75G (called 4G by both, even though it is not) as Verizon has... but neither the AT&T nor the Verizon iPhone4 can utilize any of the 4G networks on either carrier, that will have to wait for the iPhone5.

The iPhone4 itself is twice as fast as the 3Gs.

It might be theoretically faster, but not in practice.

P.S. Two of us did side-by-side comparisons for the same small and large data sets. The Verizon finished over 4 times faster in every case. This is important to us as we design systems requiring large updates, 240MB to 2.2GB, every 28 days for our users.

I think it might depend on the network demand in your area and bandwidth sharing taking place at any given time. I have experienced both very high speeds on AT&T and abysmally slow depending on location and time of day.

android.process.core has stopped

Well, I was wrong. Some weeks ago, I sang the praises of the Viewsonic G-tablet and android tablets in general. This was before I encountered the above listed error. Apparently, this is a common Android error - roughly equivalent to the Windows blue screen of death. It is triggered by a variety of situations which may or may not be reproducible.

On an android phone, the solution is to do a hard reset and erase all your information before starting again. On an android tablet, the same applies, if the manufacturer has built in a hard reset function that can be accessed by hardware.

Unfortunately, the gtablet’s factory reset can only be accessed through the software menu, and the error blocks you from doing that. If you cannot *reflash* the device to factory baseline, you must send it in for a warranty repair.

Needless to say the gtablet is sold, and an iPad is on the way.

I was wrong, Apple has nothing to fear from these devices.

“I think it might depend on the network demand in your area and bandwidth sharing taking place at any given time. “

Could very well be. Unfortunately, in our area it is a common occurrence.

Awards for "Best Mobile App" and "App of the Year on the Apple Platform" went to Rovio/Clickgamer/Chillingo for Angry Birds,

I'm sick of Angry Birds! Just when I think I'm done with the game, they offer holiday versions - Halloween, Christmas, Valentines' Day, etc., for free. I can't stop playing, arghh!

They're drug dealers. Soon they'll offer you the one you'll just have to buy. They've got you hooked.
