The risk of a devastating space storm wreaking havoc like a "global Katrina" and costing the world trillions of pounds should be taken "seriously", claims Britain's top scientist.
Professor Sir John Beddington, the Government's chief scientist, said that the Sun was waking up from a quiet period and was likely to throw a lot more "space weather" at the Earth.
Also, the world was increasingly vulnerable to damage because of our dependence on satellites, communication networks and computer devices.
If a solar storm hit the Earth, it could throw out navigation systems, crash stock markets, ground aircraft and cause power cuts.
The financial fallout could cost £1.2 billion in the US alone, claim experts.

Sun storm may be ‘global Katrina’, or maybe not.
We need a solar tax to address this threat.
Exactly. Obviously the only way to save mankind from the ravages of such a devastating sun storm would be to look to the wondrous U.N. and institute one-world government that would no doubt do something about it.

ROFLMAO
1.2 billion... oh my aching sides,
we are how many trillion in debt and spending like there is no tomorrow... oh wait on
maybe if we spend 1.2 billion it will all go away.....
UBER ASS CLOWN SCIENTIST (doubtful) alert

...and it was caused by global warming.
Unlike the global warming horsecrap, which is scientifically unprovable and is a very controversial theory, to say the least, this solar flair business is pretty solid and serious. The well documented Carrington event of 1859, which took out telegraph systems all over Europe and North America, demonstrates that a similar event would seriously screw all of us over because we are much more dependent on electrical systems than we were back then....
Just in case anyone doubts it, /sarc up front...
1. Bush’s fault!
no, no wait! wait!
2. Global warming!
um, no, no, I’ve got it!
3. Those evil, intolorant Christians!
4. (your turn)
Why should I stay up nights worrying about something I can do absolutely nothing about.?
intolorant = intolerant (can’t spell today)
Several years ago, Bob Dole was addressing a gathering ‘honoring’ Ted Kennedy. Dole brought up some event from many, many years prior by saying, “Now let me tax your memories...”, at that point Kennedy said, “I wish I had thought of that!”
Let it storm! My VHF antennas are pointing north just waiting the the big aurora so I can bounce a signal off it.
“Why should I stay up nights worrying about something I can do absolutely nothing about.?”
Speaking as a Ham operator, I’ve been waiting 6 years for the start of sunspots. Worry? Ha.
Although I thoroughly encourage those that are deeply concerned to keep all their electronic devices in their refrigerator. The metal skin will protect them from the damaging solar rays.
“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed - and hence clamorous to be led to safety - by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.” - H. L. Mencken
Word.
I put my radio inside my freezer and now I can barely hear it.
Gotta’ be the sunspots.
Oh no. Now Obama will have another excuse to launder trillions through the states to the the public employee unions and thus 100 billion into the DNC. We’re doomed.
Translation: The grant spigot's been trickling lately. More grants!
I’m having a difficult time accepting these continual Doomsday scenarios from Scientists. Virtually all of them are overblown, especially Global Warming. I say this one ends more with a whimper than a bang.
Mine too. In other news, 40Meters has S9+10 worth of noise right now, making the band completely unusable where I am. 75Meters isn't much better..........
Obviously we're just in the beginnig (a late beginning at that!) of the next cycle. The other night I managed to get Switzerland, France, Italy and Germany on 40Meters. Typically that's very hard to do here in 9-land in the evening hours.
BTW, any ham operators on FR members of the 3905 Century Club?
Space Weirdness Ping?
