A GOP frontrunner in the party's 2012 primary with a checkered past on health care, Mitt Romney produced a rather bold headline today with his op-ed in the USA Today: As first act, out with ObamaCare.
"Health care is more than just one-sixth of the American economy. It is a source of well-being for individuals and families. We are blessed with much that is good in American health care. But we have taken a turn for the worse with ObamaCare, with its high taxes and vastly expanded federal control over our lives. I believe the better course is to empower the states to determine their own health care futures."

This guy is so doomed. He has no way to attack the number one Achilles Heel of Obummer with the disaster he produced in MA. He needs to go away and write books on fly fishing.

Here's a thought. Assume Daniels enters, and Barbour endorses him immediately. In July, Christie endorses Daniels, and on Labor Day, Romney withdraws in favor of Mitch. That woudl do it, IMHO..
Riiiiiiiiight.
I’m ambivalent about Romney (I’m a Herman Cain supporter), but I don’t hold the Mass. health care program against him. Our health care system does need to be fixed somehow. He tried something; it didn’t work. In private enterprise, you try something. If it works, great. If not, you tweak it or roll back to the previous system. The trouble is, government doesn’t roll back anything. I have no problem with someone trying something and recognizing that it didn’t work. (One of my questions about Romney is whether he recognized his health care reform program didn’t turn out to be a good thing or if he’s only saying it because that’s the way the conservative political wind is blowing.)
Can’t the next prez just do one waiver; everyone!
I have no doubt the Dems are wetting themselves in hopes he’ll be the nominee for the Rep. side of the aisle. There’s no way lib light can beat hardcore lib. At least not historically, and Romney ripped his pants with Romneycare. He has no credibility now on one of the biggest messes this nation overwhelmingly wants repealed.
NOW THAT is definitely a very courageous thing to say. </sac>
He may not have a prayer, but I’m glad he’s laying down this marker, since all the other candidates will have to match or beat it. It’s a clever idea to instantly issue an executive order giving all states a waiver: he has that authority and it means he has the upper hand when it comes to repeal no matter how obstructionist Dems care to be.
Sorry, Mitt . . . your love affair with government-run health care and your loving endorsement of homosexual activist says it all for me. Can’t think of anything you could do or say to change my mind.
Finally, an intelligent comment on a Romney thread.
I suppose we’ll see Mutt next at the gun range with a Bushmaster.
I hate to sound so negative BUT ObamaCare will be rolling along pretty strongly by 2012. It will be next to impossible to repeal it because by then you will be TAKING AWAY something someone had given to them. The Courts need to rule on the Constitutionality of it but even then there will be appeals.
I hope I am wrong.
The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the Federal Government, are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State Governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce; with which last the power of taxation will for the most part be connected. The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects, which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people; and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State.
I understand what you are saying... but the only problem is that Romney tried something that involved the government. If he tried a route through the private sector and failed, people would be more forgiving. But seeing him try something with the government involved scares people. Conservatives need to stick to their principles, especially when faced with a national problem. Always stick to your principles.
