As newly minted princess Kate Middleton greeted Michelle Obama in the ornate surroundings of Buckingham Palace Tuesday, it was hard to believe she was wearing a $340 dress from British retailer Reiss a frock any commoner could buy.
Middletons appearance in the nude-hued Shola dress sparked a shopping frenzy, causing the retailers Web site to crash and the dress to immediately sell out. And now style watchers are hailing the Duchess of Cambridge as the paupers princess the first stylish royal to embrace affordable trends, and the perfect recession-era symbol.

Princess Kate outclassed Michelle simply by showing up.
To be completely fair, though, I think any dressmaker, or probably any female Freeper, would confirm that Kate Middleton would look good in just about anything.
Is Michelle wearing a couch?!?
It looks like MO borrowed that jacket from one of her kids.
Oh, and Princess Kate: eat a freaking sandwich!!!!
Moochelle has to pay more for her duds because of the amount of material needed to cover her Wookie frame and fat arse.
What is with the short jackets? It looks like it is 2 sizes to small.
Pro: Michelle wore sleeves for the first time
Con:This outfit is ridiculous and makes her butt look big. She must be surrounded by yes men that never tell her shes gaudy and big butted.
Doesn’t The First Frump know that the big, flowing skirt and the short loose jacket only emphasize her bulk??
Come on! That outfit makes Michelle look pretty nice. There are plenty of times where that isn't the case, but not here.

Michelle...it’s okay. It’s not frightening to look at.
The Duchess...yummers. Kate could make burlap look good.
IMO, the main problem with Michelle’s outfit is that it’s too dressy for afternoon.
I had a little bolero-type thingy that I used to wear back in the late 80’s - early 90’s. It looked just like Ms. Obama’s shrug.
I think I got it at Casual Corner for about thirty bucks. I donated it to Goodwill at some point - maybe that’s my old bolero that she’s wearing! It’s short on the arm in this picture and looks like it’s a bit tight across the back. Maybe it’s just a size or two too small for her, so she could have pulled it out of the Goodwill bin.
Hey, stranger things have happened...
Good grief! I had a dress just like Michelle’s that I wore to my first opera in 1954! But, the fabric in mine was prettier — black and tourquise brocade with a black bolero — and the skirt was longer. I went with a Lutheran minister’s son and his parents. I was 14.
I love the dress Kate is wearing.
Michelle looks like she wrapped herself in curtains she found in the home of a little old lady with too many cats.
Sans jacket, cute dress for a 20 yr. old. Color combo for preschoolers.
