'South Park' creators respond to fan freakout
Today ^ | June 16, 2011 | Ree Hines

Shortly after “South Park’s” midseason finale aired last week, fans (and many television critics) predicted that the end was near for the long-running series. After all, a cynical episode framed around the notion of that we’re all getting too old to appreciate more of the same must mean the show is on the way out, right?

Wrong.

Ill always tune in to watch South Park, but this season was a total disappointment. The show does best when it focuses on current events, it didn’t do that this season and it had an episode that ripped on the Tea Party. I still want to see another season, but man this season was such a downer.

The writing has been absolutely crappy this season. It’s like they just took this whole season off.

You could say the same about the Simpsons. About 15 years ago.

South Park jumped the shark at least two seasons ago.

There were a couple of moments in the rip on the royal wedding.

But yes, they are over hammering the shock value of obnoxious,
repulsive, and just plain bad taste cultural "items" instead of
elegantly weaving such sordidness into their stories.

I agree, this is the worst season ever. They didn’t even use current events to create episodes, the only thing approaching ridicule of the status quo was crack baby basketball league and even that wasn’t very funny. Maybe their broadway play is taking all their time....

If this is what we have to look forward to then they may as well stick a fork in it.

Ditto. I thought the only interesting thread this past 1/2 season was the assignment of Butter’s play personas, truck-driver Butters, Inspector Butters, etc., to multiple personalities. The thought of a kid playing “make-believe” being completely foreign to the psychologist seems about right.

It’s probably because the creators werevety busy with their Broadway interest with Book of Mormon.

Ditto to both of your points. And they had soooooooo much material they could have worked with this season. I mean wouldn’t it have been funny to have an episode where Butters gets emailed lewd photos from Anthony Weiner? Or an episode where Charlie Sheen moves to South Park and hangs out with Stan’s dad? Maybe they should hire me as a writer those two episodes may have saved this season. Lol :P
