Government dollars fuel wealth: D.C. enclaves reap rewards of contracting boom
The Washington Post ^ | August 16, 2011 | Annie Gowen

Millions of dollars worth of federal contracts transformed Anita Talwar from a government accounting clerk into a wealthy woman — one who can afford a $2.8 million home in the Washington suburbs with its own elevator, wine cellar and Swarovski crystal chandeliers.

Talwar, a 59-year-old immigrant from India, had no idea that she and her husband would amass a small fortune when she launched a company providing tech support to the federal government in 1987. But she shrewdly took advantage of programs for minority-owned small businesses and rode a boom in federal contracting.

Talwar’s success — and that of hundreds of other contractors like her — is a key factor driving the explosion of the region’s wealth over the last two decades. It also has exacerbated the gap between high- and low-wage workers, which is wider in the D.C. area than almost anywhere else in the United States.

Washingtonians now enjoy the highest median household income of any metropolitan area in the country, and five of the top 10 jurisdictions in America — Loudoun, Howard and Fairfax counties, and Falls Church and Fairfax City — are here, census data shows.

Is it any coincidence that as America declines, Washington DC prospers?

No. America prospered grandly when DC was a reclaimed fever-swamp uninhabitable during the summer, and it took most representatives two or more days to travel to or from it.

worked in that area from ‘86ish to ‘95. then again for a few years since.

washdc is where all the tax money comes in... yet nothing is made.

go to tyson’s or the reston town center. go to the parking lots. notice the cars and how new they are. the vast majority are within 3 years old. not cheap models either.

they set the policies that extract money from us and pay their salaries and pensions.

pretty juicy setup.

as for this contract shop, AMT, i’m unaware of them. indian owners taking advantage of the 8a status... i wonder what percentage of their 350 member staff was American born and what percentage was H1b or L3 (or whatever new visa program has popped up since). looks like their charge rate is around $150/hr. not unheard of in govt tech contracting. the actual tech person would get 40-75% of that, depending on the shop.

Gov’t dollars fuel transfer of wealth, they do not create it. Wealth is created by manufacturing and mining.

According to the Washington comPost, everybody around DC drawing a large salary is a war profiteering corporate-jet owning millionaire or billionaire defense contractor. Nope, they couldn’t find any bureaucrats or lobbyists or lawyers. They must not exist at all!

Thank you Washington comPost for clearing that up for us!
