In the trenchcoats: Designer hopes to make a killing in New York with bulletproof fashion line

A fashion designer may have found the answer to gun violence — stylish clothing for men and women that is completely bulletproof. God help us.

Designer Miguel Caballero first developed his line in his native Colombia, where wealthy clients needed protection from Medellin drug cartel hit men, but didn't like the bulky look of bulletproof vests. After all, if you must run away from a shooter, why not do it in couture? …

Celebrities were the first to wear his impermeable apparel. Caballero made Sean (Diddy) Combs a bulletproof white dinner jacket, tunics for the Wu Tang Clan and a kimono for Steven Seagal, New Yorker writer David Owen reports. …

There's the classic Firenze Coat for women, a figure-hugging trench. For fall, there's the Giorgo, in plaid. Men, who seem to be in more gun battles in the city, have more choices in Caballero's online catalog. There's the Bold, an Italian-leather motorcycle jacket; and the outdoorsy Extrema jacket, which comes in Mars Red, Turkish Sea or Apricot Orange. There are also dress and polo shirts and, of course, bulletproof hoodies.

Caballero, who developed his idea in the late 1990s, has thoughtfully created his fashion, which he lines with Kevlar-like material, with three levels of toughness. You can order your chic shields "mild" — they'll stop a bullet going at 1,120 feet per second, like a 9-mm.; a "medium," which they say will stop a .357 magnum bullet; and a "high," which Caballero claims will stop the fusillade from an Uzi. Best of all, if you get shot in the first six months, which is becoming increasingly likely these days, Caballero will let you trade your purchase in for a new one! …

Some states are considering new legislation to prohibit or restrict sales of Body Armor to civilians, e.g., New York. If you are in a state that passes such a law, you would be well advised to make your Body Armor purchase now before it becomes much more expensive and inconvenient, if not prohibited altogether.

An Uzi is a 9mm. What a maroon.

Don't think any Lugers or Beretta M9s can fire off 600 rounds per minute though.

They are talking about penetration, not volume. Now it is true that a 9mm fired from an Uxi will be going a couple hundred fps faster due to the longer barrel, and will therefore penetrate slightly better. However, you can’t really fire 600 rounds per minute from an Uzi because you have to reload after every 30 rds. And you can fire 30 rounds from a good semi auto in a few seconds also.

Just sayin.

p.s. of course I was calling the author who probably knows nothing about guns a maroon, not you. Just to clarify.

Understood, but what they mean is resistance to multiple hits.

And not to get all gun-geek up in here, but a standard size UZI SMG with it's long barrel and hot 9mm SMG-spec ammo approaches the power of some .357 Magnum rounds fired out of a standard pistol-length barrel.

“Caballero, who developed his idea in the late 1990s”

The bad guys in “Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man” had bulletproof trenchcoats. That flick came out in the early 90s.
