Enormous solar outburst could dazzle your weekend [Alaska, Seattle, Des Moines, Chicago, Boston]

Auroras may dazzle more people than usual this weekend as Earth receives a glancing blow from an enormous solar outburst that erupted on Jan. 19.

The outburst, known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), was detected by sun-watching satellites.

Researchers at the University of Alaska's Geophysical Institute predict that auroras should be visible from Seattle, Des Moines, Chicago, and Cleveland, to Boston and Halifax, Nova Scotia Saturday and Sunday nights, weather permitting.

...

Space Weather Center forecasters say they expect the encounter to generate a weak geomagnetic disturbance beginning around 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time Sunday Jan. 22 and lasting through Jan. 23. It could trigger weak fluctuations in electricity flowing through the long-distance transmissions lines and have a minor effect on satellites.

It doesn’t matter. We (30 miles from Seattle) have not had power since Thursday’s ice storm ... which came after the snow and before the next snow and the little windstorm we had last night, and this will come in the middle of the big wind storm they are predicting for tomorrow. So far the flooding has been minor, but we are still on flood watch. What’s a little CME compared to all that?

Hey I got $40k of solar panels on my roof this year. Am I in more danger of damage from the sun occurring to them?

WooHoo! I'm monitoring 52.525MHz. Can we finally get some sunspot action for the middle wave bands? Pretty please?

I'm making a cq call about every 10 minutes on 52.525 MHz right now. We're in the terminator penumbra right now, so I figure this should be the right time of day. Not so much as enough static to break squelch, so far.

I really enjoyed 6 meter FM during the last solar max, and would like to have that chance again, please Lord, before I die. I probably only have 2 solar maxes left in my lifetime.

We are in Twin Cities / Minnesota. Does this explain why Comcast has been freezing episodically for the past few days?

Doesn’t seem to happen with the local channels, but with the cable news - everything freezes for a few minutes, then comes back. But, will then freeze again a while later.

Maybe I should start timing the freezes?

LOL! Chasing problems like that is very complicated. Does it happen at the same time of day? Or randomly? It could be the sats, it could be ground equipment, it could be a bunch of stuff. Is it raining? Is it snowing? What is the status of the LNA on the sat head end?

Is the cleaning staff unplugging equipment at the same time every night to vacuum the floor? (That actually happened)

I'm just a cook now. Ask me to troubleshoot your broken bernaise sauce. ;)

It is brutal cold - maybe we should blame that?

Well, bearnaise sauce is very temperature sensitive if you don't want to make scrambled eggs but still want to cook it.

Oh wait, what am I troubleshooting again? ;)
