Beautiful. Most likely a map, I’d say.

WHOA!

We will find more of these in more places when the glaciers recede a bit more before the next ice age.

There are “reasons” for the Earth to breathe.

Thanks for the ping Civ.

Love the total confirmation of the thesis that these guys skied UPHILL, and then DOWNHILL to outrun their game.

I saw it as a depiction of back and forth, drawn on a wall.

The petroglyphs have the very essence of the IKEA pictorial instructions. http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/customer_service/assembly/assembly_instructions_B.html

The petroglyph in question is carved into the granite outcrop ~ it's laying down. You must imagine it being tipped up and placed on a mountain side.

The bear goes up the mountain, then he comes down the mountain. You don't just walk over and spear the bear ~ you must catch him by surprise.

First you ski up (short strokes) then you ski down (long strokes ~ you go further for a given effort when going down hill.

Then, you get below the bear, who is running down hill and can't stop on the snow and he impales himself on your spear.

The Sa'ami petroglyphs show each man with a penis ~ rather like the Norse did thousands of years later, albeit in an erect position.

The larger the man, the larger the penis.

You are not seeing any of that on the Canadian petroglyphs.

MAY be a reason for that.

Very cool Civ, I didn't know about those. I should try to see them one day.

muawiyah, I was with you till you said:
Then, you get below the bear, who is running down hill and can't stop on the snow and he impales himself on your spear.

LOL! Just imagine the poor guy who gets that job.

"Enoch, just go down the hill and wait for the running bear to fall into your spear!
It'll be easy, I promise!"

The drawing is an instruction manual for how to hunt and kill a bear.

Remember, the Sa'ami is relatively small compared to the bear. He has little room for error. If he were to run up to the bear and poke him he might hit a rib.

If, on the other hand, he is able to get ahead of the bear on the trail, and has the bear come down hill toward him, then when he spears him he has more than his own muscle at play. The bear will run into the spear with far more force than the man could apply plunging the spear into the bear.

So, it's going to be tough to get somebody to do this ~ no doubt ~ but if the bear needs killed somebody's got to do it. You reward him with the claws ~ which he can put in thongs and hand out to his favorites. You give him the bear's gall bladder for a long.............. well, you get the idea.

A successful bear hunter who uses his skis and spear correctly will get ALL the girls!
