An earlier article described the location as ‘the Gulf of Mexico’

I'm thinking it was the writer's way of claiming the Gulf of California for Mexico.

Little did they know that Mexico already owned the Gulf of California and there is already a Gulf of Mexico.

Certainly a "young genius", regardless. LOL

It was near Agua de Las Flores and Tiburon Island. The Seri Indians live a very difficult and wretched life in this area. Their ironwood carvings are remarkable. Their homes are essentially brush shelters.

It’s more likely simple transposition. Gulf of California is a ridiculous yankee name for the Sea of Cortez.
