You can now withdraw cash from an ATM with your mobile

From today, people with the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and NatWest mobile banking app can take money from an ATM by making a request on their mobile phone.

Since you have to be at the ATM anyway, why use your mobile?

I wondered the same thing, but here are the two scenarios described in the article:

1. You forgot your wallet or ATM card, but have your phone with you.
2. Once you make the request on your phone, you get a six digit PIN that is good for three hours. You could call a kid at college and give them the PIN to use as a a quick way to get money to them (they’d only get the amount you requested.)

Hope Im standing near an ATM when someone’s phone does a butt-call to dispatch thier cash!

It would be a way to allow someone else access to specific withdraw by calling them and telling them the 6 digit access that only last 3 hours and has a specific amount tied to it.

I’m thinking a parent and a distant college kid as a reason to use it.

This has been available in South Africa for a couple of years already, although I’ve never used it. Apparently here you need to make the withdrawal within 30 minutes. Can be used either with your own cellphone number, or if you input someone else’s number the PIN will be sent to them to enable them to draw cash.
