GE recalls 1.3 million dishwashers due to fire hazard

GE Appliances has recalled about 1.3 million of its GE, GE Adora, GE Eterna, GE Profile, and Hotpoint dishwashers because an electrical failure in the heating element can pose a fire hazard.

GE has received 15 reports of heating element failures, including seven reports of fires, three of which caused extensive property damage. No injuries have been reported, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. None of these recalled dishwashers are in our current Ratings.

Sold for $350 to $850 at appliance dealers, builder distributors, and other stores nationwide from March 2006 through August 2009, the recalled dishwashers came in black, white, bisque, stainless steel, and CleanSteel.

My GE appliance came with my house. Can you all talk me out of my rampant paranoia that GE wants to do something dastardly to my fully functioning appliance?

G.E.’s propensity for outsourcing lead me to misunderstanding the headline.

I thought they were talking about 1.3 million Chinese......dishwashers.....

this wont be of any help delta...

every...and i mean every ..[4..to be exact] one of my g.e. appliances had to be serviced....and...you guessed it... my dishwasher is included in this recall....the g.e. rep. on the phone....[here’s the recall number everyone...866-918-8760..]
told me i had a choice...let the rep come to my house and change out the element or accept a 100 voucher for a new dishwasher...but a new one costs 250 plus depending on the model...the rep came changed it out and i hope that is that...

“Can you all talk me out of my rampant paranoia that GE wants to do something dastardly to my fully functioning appliance?”

This one may be legit, I don’t know. But keep in mind that dishwashers are PRIME CANDIDATES for the “Smart Grid”. The idea would be to control them from “central command” (i.e., the government, or utility), and not have them operate when power production is tight.

So you build the required interface (a wireless link) into the new dishwashers, but what do you do with the old ones (tens of millions)? Good question - perhaps recall them for ‘safety’ reasons, and have ‘the man’ install the device...at least for 1.3 million of them.

This is hardly the first dishwasher recall that GE gas had.
I had a Kenmore (built by GE) that if you had used the Rinse Agent reservoir there was a chance of leaking into the wiring > Fire.

They offered to send a guy out to fix it or give you a $150 credit towards a new Dishwasher. Forget that, I bought a Bosch.

Yea, I know. I was just trying to help keep the paranoia level up here...although in the future...???
