Obama believes he'd got the better of Romney as he walked off stage to the dismay of his aides, according to a Democrat close to the campaign The President failed to prepare properly, opting instead to visit the Hoover Dam the day before the showdown Democrat claims he was so disdainful of Romney that he didn't think he needed to even engage with him Had one-liners on 47% prepared but chose not to use them

When President Barack Obama stepped off the stage in Denver last week the 60 million Americans watching the debate against Mitt Romney already knew it had been a disaster for him.

But what nobody knew, until now, was that Obama believed he had actually won.

In an extraordinary insight into the events leading up to the 90 minute showdown which changed the face of the election, a Democrat close to the Obama campaign today reveals that the President also did not take his debate preparation seriously, ignored the advice of senior aides and ignored one-liners that had been prepared to wound Romney.

A winning smile? Obama grins durign the debate with Romney full of confidence that he was going to win

The Democrat said that Obama's inner circle was dismayed at the 'disaster' and that he believed the central problem was that the President was so disdainful of Romney that he didn't believe he needed to engage with him.

'President Obama made it clear he wanted to be doing anything else - anything - but debate prep,' the Democrat said.

'He went into the debate armed with a number of one-liners to throw at Romney, including at least two about Romney not caring about 47 per cent of the country. But he decided not to use them.'

Photos and more text at the link. PS: Did Obama 'decide not to use them' or was he too ashamed that he froze and was incapable of delivering rehearsed lines?

Had to cut last two words of article title to fit FR requirements. Original title:

In order to defeat my mortal enemies I focus intently on my navel.

If that doesn’t work I suck my thumb.

The man reads a great speech, but can’t think on his feet worth a darn. He needed TOTUS to talk to school children.

Barry needs to steal some of Rimshot Joe's gaffes for the next debate like...

Why did the chicken cross the road?

Because Romney was trying to take away his government subsidy.

It’s clear that he has the same disdain for the constitution, the congress and the American people and would rather be doing anything...anything...other than being the President.

Let’s make his wish come true come November 7.

Exactly right. It's a bunch of baloney and nothing more than the latest strand of excuse spaghetti to be thrown up against the wall of public opinion to see if it will stick.

He didn't think he won. He clearly says "you won" to Romney at the end of the debate. Now his flaks hit the airwaves with stories that he thought Romney was so inferior he fought him with one hand tied behind his back and thought he'd won. Pure bollocks.

Now what has Obama been “smoking” something for him to say that?

It is that he did not know what hit him.

This article is disturbing for just so many reasons.

I think the most prescient part of the story is that when faced with preparing to defend a pass/fail moment assessment of his Presidency that Obama decided to go to Hoover Dam instead.

Doesn’t that just sum up everything about the man? Golf too much, vacation too much, “Can’t I just eat my waffle?”.

obama has lived a life of a steady adoring choir to preach to and the protection of his skirts in the media and political establishment.

i predict he will attempt cheap shots to try to rile Romney in 2nd debate.

he’s got nothng, tho, without his adoring skirts to make it all better.

When I was in college debate class, I had to prep for a debate the next day that represented one tenth of my final grade. I chose to spend the night before partying with friends in the student commons. The next day, I walked into class wholly unprepared, and when it was time for me to take the podium to deliver opening arguments for the “negative” side of the question, I simply said, “There’s nothing I can say to refute my opponent’s excellent opening remarks regarding the question before us” and then sat down.

Obama should have done the same and saved us all 90 minutes of watching him being bludgeoned like a baby fur seal.

Rodney King wasn’t beaten as badly.
