This week's feature is Disney's epic version of Jules Verne's classic underwater adventure novel "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea." One of the best films from the Disney Studio of this era.
Well, with so many schools there, you’d expect a lot of leagues .....
Disney made a lot of great movies back then.
I have seen a couple of other versions of “20,000 Leagues”, and none of them were even close to the Disney version.

Great movie. I and my kids were sad when the ride was discontinued at Disney World - Florida.
One of those movies I used to love to watch as a kid, on a Sunday afternnon/evening, on channel 9’s Family Classics with Frazier Thomas.
It was filmed on papyrus.
The visual scene that grabbed me when I saw it in the theater was the the wall behind which was the futuristic source of power for the sub. It was studded with translucent hemispheres behind which you saw the swirling colors of the process by which it was produced.
Well, that, and the tentacles of the giant squid.
First movie I ever saw. At a drive-in movie.
How could it be 1954? I saw it in theater when I was a kid. Ever since I’ve wanted by own submarine with a ramming prow.
Indeed. A lot of great old classics there. Just rewatched some of THE 39 STEPS recently.
I didn’t know that. I’m sorry to read it was discontinued. I wonder if the Anaheim Disneyland still has it?
I generally try to pick films that would be the ones I would see on the local station’s Sunday afternoon movies as a child.
Architeuthis (giant squid) really does that to subs. Eye is the size of a soccer ball - largest eyeball on the planet. Sperm whale eats em. Considered one of the largest prey/preditor matchups in the animal kingdom.
Those old Disney movies were family friendly but not in the least bit effeminate.
Some of the better ones were: “Treasure Island”, “Kidnapped”, “Darby O’Gill and the Little People”, “Swiss Family Robinson”, etc.
All of them really good adventure.
Went to the drive-in many times but can’t recall what movies I saw. Seems like we had a different agenda.
The original Submarine Voyage had Military like Nuclear Subs which were later painted Yellow and became “Research” Subs. PC gone wild.
After it was closed for a while, they reopened it as the “Finding Nemo” ride.
Tokyo Disney has a version of the Ride inside a man made Volcania Island. There is a static full size version of the Nautilus in the Lagoon that looks just like the original.
I used to have a model of the Nautilus that was about three feet long. When I got an offer I couldn't refuse, I sold it.
It is my understanding that the 20K lagoon was constantly leaking into the underground passageways under the Magic Kingdom used to move personnel and supplies out of view of guests. The maintenance became too expensive to stay open even though it was a classic and popular attraction. It was filled in for a while and allowed to settle, at that time under Pooh’s play place. It is now part of the greatly expanded New Fantasyland, still under construction.
You can still find one of the the old Nautilus ride vehicles submerged in the swimming area of Disney’s Castaway Cay. I snorkled around when I was there but did not find it.
I just picked up the 1916 version from Grapevine Video. It had been a long time since I’d seen it, and I didn’t remember it incorporating elements from Mysterious Island.
