Dan Lurie, whose chiseled physique and feats of strength earned him the title of Americas most muscular man and made him a cover model for fitness magazines and a walking promoter for both the sport and the business of bodybuilding, died on Wednesday in Roslyn, N.Y. He was 90...
Not as recognizable a name as Charles Atlas, Joe Weider, Arnold Schwarzenegger or Lou Ferrigno, Mr. Lurie nonetheless was a celebrity among bodybuilders. For one thing, he was not just strong but freakishly strong. According to his website, Mr. Lurie once did 1,665 push-ups in 90 minutes, and in a photo he can be seen at age 17 holding a 150-pound barbell above his head with one arm...

“Mr. Lurie once did 1,665 push-ups in 90 minutes”
I think I might be able to do that in 90 hours...maybe.
Not sure if you’re interested, but here’s a website with tons of old strength/fitness material.
1600 pushups in 90 minutes? I did 20 pushups in 40 seconds with the encouragement of several Ft Knox DI’s.On a number of occasions,in fact.
I probably could do 90 push-ups in 1,665 minutes—so I have that going for me.
Jack Lalanne was awesome. There are videos on youtube from his old show.(Happy included)
some of the plates I owned(notice the past tense ) was Dan Lurie plates...
He used to have a store near JFK.
Loved those shows when I was but a tiny one. I remember trying to pull a chair up to the tv ;-)
Jack Lalanne had a brother who actually wound up outliving him.
RIP.
I was trained by Ron Lacy, Mr. America 1957. He was in his late 60’s early 70’s during that time. He also refused to sign up with Weider.
This was in Lexington, KY. The Lexington Herald Leader visited each year, take a look at the photos.
He was a humble and good man, a deacon in his church, father of 2 sons. He had a ton of stories of those times.
His warm up bench press for reps was 240 at the age of 70.
He trained during that time 6 preachers and one heathen. I was the heathen. I am no longer a heathen largely due to him. R.I.P.
