Having fast movers come by and drop in a big punch is pretty cool.
But having an A10 or C130 hanging around all day long? SOOO much better. When you’re on the ground there’s nothing better than CAS that’s actually able to do something as soon as you need it

Wasn’t a woman flying that plane when it was hit and she brought it home?

The Army isn't allowed to own fixed wing aircraft above a certain weight. This puts the Doggies in a real bind because one thing the Air Farce cares nothing about is close air support. For that you need Marine Air. Transfer to Marine Air might be the ideal solution, if possible.

Any of those rules can be changed. CAS should be organic to the user.

One correction, the fighter mafia are/were advocates for the A-10. It appears they lost the argument over high vs low tech aircraft. It looks like we need more John Boyds in USAF and government in general to get back on track to sanity.

How would that help the Army?

Your; "Hence the Army's reliance on helicopters because the Air Force refuses to develop close-in air support aircraft."

On target!

Direct control over close air support

Adding aircraft to Marine/Navy aviation, doesn’t help the Army.

But adding it to the Army like I recommended would help the Army.

I’m sorry, I was responding to post 20, and to a lesser degree post 23, I don’t know how I got you confused with post 20.

“Give them to the Army. They should own them anyway.
/johnny “

My understanding was that that was the response a previous time the AF tried this...along with all those pilot and support slots.

The main mission for the AF is ground support and strategic bombing. They need the jets to protect their craft doing ground support.

I have no problem with that, but the Air Farce would scream bloody murder.

U.S. Air Force’s move to prematurely retire all 350 of its A-10 Warthog attack planes between 2015 and 2018.

Some short sighted officers on the war planning staff.

But then, they've been trying to get rid of the 'Hog since it came out.

If this happens, let the Marines and Army have them.

Uh-oh. Of course, since Zero plans to cripple the US military such that the country is left defenseless, this makes perfect sense. Thanks C19fan.

Caveat sidebar from 2003:

The Hog That Saves the Grunts ...... A-10 Warthogs to be retired.
