National Corvette Museum Sinkhole Collapses in Skydome
National Corvette Museum ^ | February 12, 2014 | Unattributed

Posted on 02/12/2014 8:30:20 AM PST by WXRGina

We received a call at 5:44am from our security company alerting us of our motion detectors going off in our Skydome area of the Museum. Upon arrival it was discovered that a sinkhole had collapsed within the Museum. No one was in or around the Museum at the time. The Bowling Green Fire Department arrived on the scene and secured the area. The Fire Department has estimated the size of the hole is 40 feet across and 25-30 feet deep.

It is with heavy hearts that we report that eight Corvettes were affected by this incident. Those cars include:

-1993 ZR-1 Spyder on loan from General Motors
-2009 ZR1 “Blue Devil” on loan from General Motors

The other six vehicles were owned by the National Corvette Museum including:

-1962 Black Corvette
-1984 PPG Pace Car
-1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette
-1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette
-2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette
-2009 White 1.5 Millionth Corvette

None of the cars affected were on loan from individuals. The Skydome exhibit area of the Museum is a separate structure connected to the main Museum. A structural engineer is now on-site to assess the existing damage and stability of the surrounding areas. The Museum is closed to the public for the day to allow us to carefully assess the situation. We will keep everyone informed as we know more.

With the 20th Anniversary celebration, Grand Opening of the NCM Motorsports Park, and the National Corvette Caravan coming August 27-30, we’ve got a lot to be excited about in 2014, and look forward to getting the Skydome repaired and reopened very soon.

Gaia prefers SMART cars. Proof? Have you heard of any incidents at their museum? Me neither. Case closed.

SMART cars are built by Daimler-Benz. They have a very nice museum in Stuttgart. Highly recommended.

I assumed he was talking about the Lane micro-car museum in Nashville.

Sounds big enough to have lost my fire-arms in a unfortunate sink hole accident...!

Wow. Damn. I did a delivery to the Chevy dealer a couple years ago, and as I was leaving I stopped to look at a ZR-1 convertible in the showroom. I think the sticker price was $82,000.

Salesman comes up behind me and said, 'You'd look good in that.'

I flat out told him, no, I'd look like an idiot, because for that, I could buy the condo I live in, AND pay off the Malibu I did buy here.

That looks like the ‘62 at the top of the pile. Hopefully they’ll be able to pull her up with minimal damage. As for the others... :-\

KY, being a rather wet state mostly underlain by a lot of limestone, has a great deal of karst topography, topography that’s characterized by numerous caves and sink holes. A sink hole most often forms when the limestone is dissolved out from under a particular location by water that has a high concentration of carbonic acid, which is formed by carbon dioxide dissolving in water.

Several years back we had a 5 inch rainfall in a few hours. That opened this Sinkhole which was connected to a creek in culvert buried about 45 feet down. It swallowed a Corvette parked in front of a local restaurant. It finally spit it out several months later from the far end of the culvert. All attempts to stop/repair the sinkhole failed.

This is what was left of the 'Vette.

No structural reinforcing rods or cables, just bare concrete set on dirt.
Who designed this thing?

I wonder if they can turn this into a dual purpose attraction now?

Cars and caves.

You must add goodlooking women to the mix in order to draw a crowd and in Ky we may be a poor state in money but we are rich in goodlooking fast women. God blessed Ky.
