I do believe in DNA/RNA patents (because it helps foster research and paying for the research privately) however they should have expiration dates on them.

However, they should not become "steamboat willie" in terms of Disney's supposedly 50 year copyright on "Mickey Mouse" that has been extended indefinitely...

The Patent does need to expire with no exceptions.

Quite the opposite, actually.

These tumor suppressor RNAs are missing in cancer patients. If they can be replaced — an experimental treatment known as microRNA replacement therapy — then doctors could theoretically stop the proliferation of cancer cells. But in agriculture where RNA is being engineered as a pesticide designed to kill insects that feed on crops — such as Monsanto’s RNA efforts aimed at the Western corn rootworm, the most economically destructive pest in corn production — it is paramount that the RNA in and/or on the corn that is later eaten by humans doesn’t subsequently infiltrate our cells causing who knows what kind of unintended consequences.

This could be a problem.

it is already illegal in Europe.

why can’t the GMO be labeled in the USA? just labeled. We label aspartame, sacarine, sugar, fructose, high fructose corn syrup, etc...

We label MSG (to the point where they have started using new names for MSG)...

Overly long, still not horrendous in terms of science writing.

Well presented and balanced enough to indicate the Chinese teams findings are not correct. (And, even if they were indeed not artifact/contamination such a finding wouldn’t point to any danger).

The Chinese scientists comments are also a huge red flag:

“Most of the people [who speculate about our work] just don’t believe it because the concept right now, I have to say, is broken by my results,” Zhang told Boulder Weekly in a recent interview from Nanjing. “They don’t want to believe until I have new data or the other groups reproduce some of our data. And of course some other people, for whatever reason I don’t want to say … I don’t want to even touch … they are just against our discovery no matter what it is.””

Arguing from this perspective, as a pioneer who is persecuted for revolutionary results, is not how a scientist argues. In fact such argument is the province of cranks, although I don’t think he is a crank, just frustrated and wrong with overly large ambition.

‘I’ve been a scientist for 30 years, I think I know what I’m doing and when I publish the paper you can comment on it.’

According to Vance, Monsanto representatives told her, “We were hoping to get to it before that happens.”

Just because a gene ‘turns off’ something that you don’t want doesn’t mean that it doesn’t ‘turn on’ something else that you may not want even more...........

read the article and yes very good points. Perhapse dna could be viewed like how atoms are, since they are a building “block” they cannot be patented.

Much how you cannot patent Atoms like hydrogen, however you may patent a “process” for using/creating Hydrogen.

but only the process... not the actual product.

It would be like a patented process for fracking, just because you use a patented process for fracking to make more natural gas you cannot patent the gas that flows into people’s homes...

What are the new names? I have three boys who have very negative behavior effects from eating MSG containing foods. So we read labels looking for the stuff.

It’s a natural substance! It’s all in your head! MSG is safe, the science is settled! You’re a Luddite for believing that hippie crap!

The above is of what you will be accused by other FReepers. Here’s the list that I use. http://www.truthinlabeling.org/hiddensources.html

I’ve found that growing and preserving as much as I can greatly helps, along with making most of our food from scratch.

[ Science by bureaucrat ]

It all started in the early 1960’s with the “Scientific Elite” that Eisenhower warned us about in his farewell speech...

It really blossomed after Nixon created the EPA and we entered into the Climate Scientists who were more politician than scientist.

The RNAi has to be expressed in the seed so Monsanto can control seed production.

Lol. I don’t worry too much about what others think about food sensitivities. One person in our house can’t have this and another can’t have that. It is just the way things are.

Agricultural Giant Battles Small Farmers
CBS News, April 26, 2008
"Pollination occurs, wind drift occurs. There's just no way to keep their products from landing in our fields," David said. "What Monsanto is doing across the country is often, and according to farmers, trespassing even, on their land, examining their crops and trying to find some of their patented crops," said Andrew Kimbrell, with the Center For Food Safety. "And if they do, they sue those farmers for their entire crop."
