"Pink slime" may have become the scourge of the meat industry a few years back, but time and rising beef prices can work wonders. The Wall Street Journal reports that the two biggest producers of the product they prefer to call "finely textured beef" have mostly bounced back after sales bottomed out in 2012 amid a flurry of negative media reports. "Two years ago, no one would return our calls," says an exec with Beef Products Inc. "Now some of those same people are calling us unsolicited, and we don't have the sales staff to maintain the new business." And a spokesman for Cargill says, "We're almost recovered from it." A big reason is that ground beef prices have risen 27% in the last two years to about $3.80 a pound.

Can't you hear the pitter-pat
And that happy tune is your step
Life can be complete
On the slimy side of the meat
0bama only knows how to grow debt, inflation and unemployment.
I’m so glad I have a local farmer from which to buy my eggs and meat.
Liberals corrupt or destroy everything they touch.
We have a small grocery store here with and old fashioned meat market in it. They survive on the meat market and have the best beef in town. I buy all my meat there.
My friend, such a place is an oasis in this dog poop on dog economy.
LOL, I grow my own but my dad used to say that hot dogs were made of the floor sweepings and the a**holes and I’ve always loved hot dogs. Pink slime is basically just rendered protein from beef and formed to be whatever. I’d rather have that than soy.
They also add ammonia to (sometime) kill E. coli. I’ll feed my family neither pink slime nor soy.
We have a local butcher that does it all from the beginning to end. I can even buy fresh cow’s knucklebones for the dogs to chew on, which they LOVE.
I noticed that our Kroger has on the labels of all ground meat, including the Angus, an ingredient list that includes “and natural flavors”. No one there knows what “natural flavors” means when I asked. Kroger claimed a couple of years ago that they stopped putting pink slime in their meat. I wonder if these “natural flavors” are the quiet return of pink slime.
Maybe Kroger’s new theme could be: “We shall add no slime before it’s time.”
It’s frustrating and annoying that it is so difficult to get a straightforward answer to a simple question about their ground meat.
Not that many years ago I used to simply pick out a chuck roast and give it to the meat cutter to grind for me. I know exactly what I was getting.
I’m now buying my ground meat only from the local butcher. It’s “A” grade rather than choice, so it’s just a little leaner, but I don’t think that makes a difference in ground chuck.
EET MOR CHIKN!!
So glad to be a vegetarian!
