MUNICH (AFP) -- Germany's world-famous Oktoberfest kicked off Saturday with the traditional tapping of the first barrel of beer, as millions of revellers are set to soak up the frothy atmosphere in the 16-day annual extravaganza.

With the cry of "O'zapft is" ("The keg is tapped"), the amber fluid officially began to flow at noon after Munich's mayor, Dieter Reiter, with due pomp and ceremony, took a mallet and in four swings breached the 200-litre barrel.

I did Oktoberfest back in ‘82. Not bad. Not great.

Over rated IMHO.

But, a stein and a brat? Good stuff.

It would’ve been better w/o the arrogant Germans.

"Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded." - Yogi Berra. LOL!

Those were the days.

Good times in 1979 & 1980 for me. Probably the only thing changed is the terrorists that GSG-9 will be concerned with from the Red Brigades to ISIS. 1980 was the year of the exploding trash barrel.

One thing the Germans and Irish have always done well, and that’s beer! Hell, it was from a ‘beer joint’ where Hitler got his big break. Probably not the best of examples, lol but you can’t deny the significance! ;^)

My two favorite beers are Guinness Extra Stout(Irish) & Warsteiner.(German) Most all American “beer” sucks.

A lot of people here have probably seen it before, but anyway, this is how to participate in a true German ‘Volksfest’:

I’m not German, I’m Swedish, but that doesn’t really matter (I hope). On behalf of my continent and beer lovers around the Globe I say:

Ein Prosit!

My path crossed w/Germans only once, at Disneyworld. Arrogant only begins to describe their attitude. It is why Germans should never possess atomic weapons.

“I did Oktoberfest back in ‘82. Not bad. Not great.

- The Chinese know how to do the Oktoberfest. Despite their language problems, their alcohol intolerance (a severe genetic disorder) and their lack of knowledge of Western habits they perform better than most other tourists.

Oktoberfest, you’ve been doing it Wong.
