Ebola can survive on surfaces for almost TWO MONTHS: (Shortened)

The number of confirmed Ebola cases passed the 10,000 mark over the weekend, despite efforts to curb its spread.

And while the disease typically dies on surfaces within hours, research has discovered it can survive for more than seven weeks under certain conditions.

During tests, the UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) found that the Zaire strain will live on samples stored on glass at low temperatures for as long as 50 days.

This research was done in 2010, so our CDC should know it.

From the article “But, specialists at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta found that the virus is present on a patient’s skin after symptoms develop, underlining how contagious the disease is once symptoms set in.”

The virus is on the skin. No body fluids involved.

Much easier to prove what it CAN do than what it CAN'T do.

The word "Science" is too often fallaciously thrown around by 0bola and crew.

We normally call physics flunk outs future poli-sci majors.

Guess we can add “CDC” spokes creatures.

Bring out your dead! The Dark Man cometh! Bring out your dead! The Dark Man cometh! Bring out your......

(hat tip to: fivecatsandadog!)

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

The NY Marathon is next weekend - think about all those runners coming in from plagued nations moving about the city at will. God help us all.

We are entering the low temperature season, aren’t we?

That’s the funniest piece of doom porn I’ve read today.

No one from that area (west Africa) is going to be running in a marathon. Anywhere. That’s not how this works. They would drop dead in about five minutes.

No runners from the affected countries are entered in the marathon.

Not exactly true.

Although the virus might escape through skin pores or reproduce while on the skin , it is doubtful.

What seems more likely is that Once a person becomes symptomatic, they have been 'leaking' from their orifices onto themselves. Coughing, sneezing, vomiting, boom.... it would show up on their skin. Depending on the conditions (like clothing and perspiration) the virus could survive a long time.

Again “would you sit next to a person from West Africa
on an airline flight?” Say the person has a runny nose or coughs a lot. No trips for me without verification of current national origin.

They probably have some real good runners too. Being able to run fast as hell for 20 miles might be a benefit in West Africa.

That can’t be. There are plenty of folks here that say unless a person’s infection is so far along that their eyes explode you can’t get obola. Just wait, they’ll be right along.

Ebola has been around for over 30 years. Our CDC, NIH, etc should all be more than ready for it.

But, like 9/11, failure is acceptable despite billions spent.

I believe that just about any “virus” can survive for long periods of time under the right conditions, cool, dark, damp, etc.

There was a time when viruses weren’t even considered to be living things because they can’t reproduce without the assistance of a living cell.

Now, prions - those, very clearly, are NOT living things, which is one of the reasons that only EXTREMELY heat (by biological standards) can render them inert.

Yes, but with cutting-edge technology, we now know what tires out shrimp.

Science marches on!!!
