I think the only legit beef was having it boot to the Start screen by default

Yeah, I could see why that would be offsetting, but really, a simple "CTRL/ESC" works wonders. Maybe since I had read the reviews, and other articles, on it I knew what to expect.

hmmm, never tried Waterfox, guess I will look into it.

I finally got a new laptop last week with Windows on it.

Windows was gone gone gone and Fedora was installed before I even had the box broken down.

I’ve been on 8.1 since it was released (free upgrade from 8) and IMO it’s as good as Windows 7.

I have been too and agree. It also makes multi-tasking easier than 7 in my opinion.

Add me to the list. I went straight from XP to 8.1. Could never get 7 to work right. 8.1 would also suck if it wasn't for Classic Shell. With CS installed it looks and runs like XP with no problems. I never even see the crappy App section.

I hear they are releasing an update that puts the start button back as default. Until I hear some really great things about it I'll stick with my current configuration.

7 is a fine replacement for XP. I kept XP until my computer crashed and had to pick up an older model to get 7, but will stick with it until I can’t make it go anymore. Then may well move to Linux.

How much? I even have SP1 and SP2 on disk. SP3 you’re on your own. I’ll through in W2K, VISTA, & 98 if the price is right.

I don’t care to fix anyone’s PCs anymore so I might as well dump all the old crap I have. BTW Windows 7 is light years ahead of XP. Windows 8.1 runs great, but has a steep adjustment curve. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either.

Anyone got an old copy of XP with the key? I need to build a new PC and got an 8.0 disc but it’s an upgrade disc. I need to put something on the hard drive so W8 sees a previous installation.

Some more poorly executed than others.

I installed the Win-10 preview on a laptop a couple of weeks ago. Win-8 wouldn’t install so I had been running Win-7 on it (the version that the machine was designed for).

Win-10 ran great - no problems and plenty fast. Then one morning when I started it it responded with “configuring Windows...” When it was finished it had upgraded to a newer build that was completely unstable. There was no way to correct it or backtrack. My only recourse was to flatten it and start over (no big deal , just annoying on this test machine).

Once reinstalled, the first thing I did was to check out “Windows Update”. Sure enough it was set to automatically accept everything Microsquish pushes out and was locked so I couldn’t turn it off. A quick hack of the registry fixed that and now I have a stable laptop again.

Change the Windows Update settings to “Let me choose” and that won’t happen to you again.
