Obama 2008 Campaign Theme Taken from Cheap Flick?
The Omega Code ^ | 29 Nov 2014 | Steely Tom

Sometimes I watch (well, mostly listen to) obscure movies that have been ripped onto YouTube. I do this in the hope of finding some overlooked "gem." As you can imagine, such a gem is rare indeed; in fact, so far, I've not found a single one.

But earlier today, I did find something that might actually be called interesting.

It was in a movie called The Omega Code, which was released in October 1999, obviously timed to coincide with the coming of the new millennium.

It is a very bad movie. It's like an end-of-days, "Antichrist Comes In The 21st Century" flick that might have been made by Ed Wood.

It actually has a prominent stars: Michael York is undoubtedly the best known; also appearing is Catherine Oxenberg (who lit up the screen in Dynasty, The Love Boat, and Baywatch). I would imagine that Mr. York might wish his name could be disassociated from this career embarrassment of a movie.

But here's the thing. There's a scene that occurs about 10 minutes into the movie, in which the protagonist, the crypto-Antichrist, who goes by the name "Gillen Lane," a fast-rising American self-help guru, is being interviewed before a studio audience on an Oprah-type talk show. He has an annoying tendency to jump up from the couch and start preaching to the audience, his eyes burning with cold fire, his arms sometimes raised to Heaven, his finger sometimes stabbing the air.

At about 10:20 (ten minutes, twenty seconds) into the YouTube rip of this awful movie, here is what the Gillen/Antichrist character says - with booming voice - to the studio audience and (presumably) the world:

"My goal is simply to create an environment to see change in people's lives."

He jumps up, walks toward the edge of the stage, points his finger at the audience, and shouts:

"Somebody out there say 'CHANGE!'"

The audience roars 'change!' in response.

G/A continues:

"That's right! Change is what we're about. I've seen too many held back, waiting on some higher power. Not until we grasp - UNTIL WE GRASP - that we ARE the higher power... can we take the next step in our evolution, and finally become whole." Audience applauds wildly, gives a standing "O".

Is it possible that Obama's 2008 Presidential campaign took its central concept from this cheesy Antichrist picture?

Wooooo boy. I mean, sure, it’s possible (very vaguely) but I doubt it. “Change” has repeatedly been a political campaign mainstay.

There was another obscure movie, entitled “Wild in the Streets”, that similarly predicted Bill Clinton’s campaign. That movie even portrayed the illegal use of FBI files against political opponents ... quite an eerie match, actually.

“We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

Exactly!

But as was mentioned by arderkrag, calls for "change" are pretty generic in political campaigns, nothing new.

In the 1970s there were a number of these movements (still churning baby boomers and middle aged Americans after the commune and other movements).

The film probably took some from that.

And the Obama campaign probably got messaging from the same leftist true believers (clearly some like Ayers influenced Obama’s political career).

Whew, for a moment I read that headline as "Cheap Trick" and felt bad since that is a favorite band.

And today there are some calling for giving 14 year olds the right to vote.

Not until we grasp - UNTIL WE GRASP - that we ARE the higher power...

Sounds a lot like "We are the ones we have been waiting for."

“We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

Only a truly self-centered, narcissist could utter that phrase and believe it in his heart.
