Fair enough.
I’d then recommend a Fire, although it’s a modify ed android OS so that may not fit your Google parameters.
Or the surface pro. The USB functionality is a clear step above most tabs.
My FIL has the windows Asus transformer and really likes it.
I have a 4 year old Transformer that runs android, I’m using it right now, the laptop is installing updates. Asus makes pretty good stuff, I am honestly surprised that it still runs like new after 4 years.
You will get a lot of advice on laptops but you won’t find a better deal than the Asus Transformer windows version. I really like my Android version but without the versatility full windows support and the 500 gigabyte hard drive.
I looked at the Asus transformer last year. After more shopping around and testing them out I decided on a Lenovo Yoga 11S. If you’ve got a Best Buy nearby I heartily recommend you check it out. I absolutely love mine.
Dell Venue Pro 8 is an 8” tablet running Windows 8.1. $149 on the Dell website. (or at least it was that price yesterday—it is regularly $199.)
But expect Apple support to end in a few short years.
We have several Apple products that are no longer supported.
Will follow and save for future reference. Thanks.
It’s 64 gigabytes of flash memory. 500 gigabytes of disc memory, I don’t remember how many gigabytes of RAM.
For comparison my android version has 16 gigabytes of flash, 1 gigabyte of RAM and no disc memory at all but it has a micro SD and standard SD slot which I have populated with 96 gigabytes of additional flash memory.
Following the replies for my own reference.
seems as though the newest chip does not have the 500 MB
Sigh
Asus is low end and you get what you pay for - a good experience with an older tablet does not insure a similar experience with a new one of the same brand.
If you plan on buying on hardware specs, you are taking the wrong road - those days are over.
Apple makes its own chips which - while they may not match some other chip number for number - give a superior performance. There is a reason why Apple has such a huge market share ...
There is also a rumor Apple will come out with a 12X8.7" iPad in the coming months - it will likely feature the same chip as in the iPhone 6 - the A9, a chip no competitor can match currently.
Try one and, like the poster above, said you might be selling your soul to iOS 8 - its that good.
why ?
I am using the tablet to surf, check my outlook and do searches. Probably also wordprocess. and send email.

I like my apple orchard, Iphone, iPad, mac pro and desk top...... but took some effort to learn as I had evolved on the PC from day one pretty much. Buyer beware.....
my opinion.
MacPro! Now I’m very jealous! Here on my five year old Mac Mini ...
Done both. Never had any problems learning what does what on either platform, just the mac OS works better, programs less likely to crash, and has no viruses.
Once upon a time I tried the MS cert sample questions - got most correct, but never followed through. Hated the idea of sitting in a cubicle too much ...
I’ve returned items to Costco (and other stores) — where the item was defective, or where it wouldn’t do what I was lead to believe it would do. That’s quite different from deliberately trying out items, and returning them until you find the one you like. The stores lose a large percentage of the value of opened items.
Usually there is no market in the US they can compete in - the US market is pretty much sowed up by Apple and Samsung.
The Asian market has lots of very cheap knock off junk, but that’s what most people can afford there. Asus fits right in with the rest of the trash ... Apple is now squeezing them in China, so Asus may not be long for this world using volume pricing to drive their financial model. It is really very difficult to compete with a company $697.51Billion market cap.
Concur.... still keep a PC desktop and laptop for “other” projects....:o)
Really ready to upgrade to a iPad Air with at least 128 gig hard drive...miss being able to use a thumb drive on the iPad as well....whaaa
Stay Safe !!
Chickensoup, I just returned to your post to see what kind of advice you were getting from the knowledgeable Freepers. I, too, want a different computer (one that can charge quickly in case of an emergency power outage and one that holds a charge). I have to admit, the answers were all above my pay grade. Is there a computer purchase for dummies site out there? I’m typing away on an Acer.
