I Wasn't Treating My Husband Fairly, And It Wasn't Fair

My "Aha Moment" happened because of a package of hamburger meat. I asked my husband to stop by the store to pick up a few things for dinner, and when he got home, he plopped the bag on the counter. I started pulling things out of the bag, and realized he'd gotten the 70/30 hamburger meat - which means it's 70% lean and 30% fat. I know we have our share of divorced men and women, and this may strike a deep chord with a few of them, so I hope they don't get too upset at reading this.

A real man know that hamburger meat should be 80/20. That has the right amount of fat to add taste to any backyard barbecued burger!

(On a side note, I have a friend in advertising, and I asked him why so much of that stereotype exists. He basically said, "'Smart wife/dumb husband' is really the only joke that's allowed anymore. Imagine doing a commercial with a clueless or helpless wife who needs a man to come in and save the day. Customers would be up in arms because of the company's antiquated views on women. Plus women make the majority of household purchases in this country, and you want to make them feel smart for choosing your product. So what you always get is the dumb husband character foil.)

It wasn't until you pointed this out on a thread I was reading that it actually clicked in my head, a lot of the commercials I was seeing while watching hockey or some of the science shows that any time they portrayed a guy doing something wrong, there was a woman to save the day. So thank you for pointing that out a while ago, because it really opened my eyes.

My thought was “Damage done, sweetie”. It’s just so much easier to live without them.

In this context, I always think of an Alan Alda move, The Four Seasons. Three married couples had always vacationed together.

One year one of the husbands shows up with his new wife, who admires him. The other two wives seem to compete in putting their own and each others’ husbands down. And try to convince the new bride to join in the fun, as if this is somehow the job a wife is supposed to do.

Don’t know if anybody else got that out of this movie, but I thought it was very sad. Intelligent women seeming to think their main purpose in life is to degrade their husbands.

I’ve never understood this kind of crap by either mate. How can you possibly make yourself lood better by running down your spouse? You’re the idiot who married him/her.

It should.

To me this is about emotional immaturity and a lack of understanding how the real world works.

Too many women who stay at home or do light jobs sometimes have this idea that their husbands are supposedly too stupid to ‘understand’ their specific needs. As if everything should be done their way specifically, down to the letter.

what this woman is experiencing, is a maturing process, something that was evidently delayed.

What are the posting rules concerning a blog? It’s certainly not mine, I don’t care to have a blog.

I think she’s just a harpie who likes to turn everything into a SITUATION. Blaming media and stereotypes is dodging reality.

Really? You don’t know how to post?

Then why did you do it. Surely you know better than to post an exceprt of a blog.

Have you met humblegunner? I think you’d like him.

“which means it’s 70% lean and 30% fat.”

I have never really understood this measurement.

LOL...you are such a smarty pants.

And I doubt many marriages dissolve over hamburger meat, so as good a read as the article was, it misses the point of why people split.

Divorce is usually about debt/money, blended families, cheating, abuse, alcoholism, or drugs....so many more reasons than the choice of 70/30 hamburger.

my wife tried this one year with my college buds when we first married in ‘86. I pulled her aside and informed her that if she continued, the behavior was a two edged sword that I was ready to use. She stopped right then and hasn’t done it since. I’m quick to point out when commercials do the same.

Wow. I skimmed through the long post. Three immediate thoughts sprang to my mind. 1) This article demonstrates how women have become feminized, haughty, arrogant and demanding.

2) How far American malehood has fallen, allowing themselves to become subjected to such shrews?

3) What happened to, "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins."?

When you cook the meat, the fat melts and all you have left of your purchase is 70% meat. If he had bought the 80%/20% meat to fat ratio, there would have been 80% left.

Fat lends more taste, but you only need so much was her point. Cost to meat ratio is important to most people. I say buy Black Angus meats, and you won’t be disappointed.
